Interactions with Wildshape and Extra Attack

So, normally Druids don't get Extra Attack (probably for this exact reason,) but with the magic of multiclassing, we get a whole new can of worms!

My parsing of the Attack rules (Found in section 9 of the PHB) and the Wildshape rules (p. 66) make exactly zero mention of Extra Attack and how they interface with wildhsape.

Soooo, whats the consensus? Attacking rules (p. 192) state that you can make an 'extra attack' as part of the action use to make an attack with extra attack. However, monster (and thus wildshape) stat blocks just have an 'action' box, as opposed to an 'attack' box, however many (most) of those actions are attacks.

To boot, there are also numerous wild-shapeable creatures (Black Bear for example) that have 'Multiattack' as one of their actions, that allows them to make two-or-more attacks. How does that factor into everything?

My guess/personal ruling would be that, if one has wild shape and extra attack, one can make two attacks with the 'attack property' (melee weapon attack, ranged weapon attack, etc) listed under the monster's 'Actions' heading. However, if a creature has any other action without attack properties, such as a spell or multiattack, those abilities would not explicitly be an 'attack' as defined by Extra Attack, and thus you wouldn't be allowed to take two. This makes Multiattack/Extra Attack redundant in some cases, but it seems like the most balanced ruling to me.

I just said this on another thread, but I will paraphrase here.

  • All of the various actions in the game (Attack, Ready, Multiattack, etc) are mutually exclusive
  • All actions are defined terms and proper nouns (they start with a capital letter whenever they appear in the text).
  • Unlike most defined terms in the game, actions are not written in bold font - something I find highly frustrating.
  • There is a major difference between making an attack, and taking the Attack action (note the capital letter).

Extra Attacks
  • Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.

Yeah, I agree with the other posters.  There is no reason a wildshaped druid can't make use of the 'extra attack' class feature if s/he has it -- the description of wildshaping is pretty explicit that you retain class features that aren't rendered impossible in the beast form, and beasts are capable of attacking.  But the 'multiattack' action is different from the attack action, so it wouldn't be compatible with extra attack.  And as Kalani points out, extra attack remains useful because of the increased flexibility it provides in the nature of the attacks compared to multiattack.

Agreed.

However, Hunters' Horde Breaker ability should work with Multiattack.
