Pretty new to D&D and I have creared a Human FIghter that uses a sheild. The rules state that the shield adds +2 to my AC. Is the +2 bonus only applied when I'm holding the shield or is the +2 permanently applied to my AC?

Thanks

If you have it on your back while running away from artilery, I d say it is better than having it in your hand. Otherwise it doesnt really do much if you dont wield it during combat.
