Is there no flanking in 5e?  I thought there was, but my group played tonight for the first time and one of my players pointed out that he could not find anything in the PHB about it.  I had just assumed it was there and was granting advantage to people who flanked their opponents out of inertia and stubborness haha.  I think if you flank an opponent there should be advantage, but curious how others are handling it in their campaigns, if anyone else out there thinks it is a situation that needs handling

There are no flanking rules in the PHB. Stay tuned for the Tactical Combat module book.

The local equivalent of flanking is when you have an ally who threatens your target. Many abilities, such as the rogue's sneak attack, key off of this condition. It is similar to flanking in many ways, without requiring that you track exact position.

Another reason for no flanking by default is the reduction is available bonuses. The only general bonus/penalty so far is the advantage/disadvantage system, and gaining advantage for something as easily achievable as flanking (especially in this edition where you are free to move around your enemy without provoking) is way to big a bonus. The real benefit of flanking currently is it limits where an enemy can go without provoking 1-2 OA's.

Then enemy can only go one square up or down in that configuaration without provoking at least 1 OA.

Flanking used to add Advantage (in the playtest), but I was happy to see them take this away. Advantage is very strong, and there are only a few ways to get it easily. That being said, flanking (using a lowercase "f" to signify it's not a rule mechanic) is still very viable because of how movement and Opportunity Attacks work. If you flank a target, they're gonna have a hard time getting anywhere.

If you really must add something, I suggest adding +1 to attack rolls. It's worse than Advantage, but with bounded accuracy, it still gives a nice edge without being TOO strong

Also disadvantage on ranged rolls to the "flanked".
