(Knowledge) Skill Checks to ID Monsters?

I didn't see anything in the PHB or basic rules about using skill checks (i.e. "Knowledge" checks in prior editions) to identify monsters and/or find useful information about them. I know in the description of arcana or nature it speaks to different types of informaion covered under those particular skills, but I didn't see anything speicifically about using them in a combat encounter.  Moreover, there is no indication as to the type of action such a check would be in combat and what it would yield.

Did I miss something?

Thanks,

Daren

There are no specific rules, the DM might allow it for some creatures and not for others, while the DC would be at the DM's mercy.

The DMG and maybe even the Monster Manual may give us more insight as to what to do here.

Arcana, Nature, and Religion are all relevant skills that still exist, and could easily be used for Monster Knowledge. What they reveal though, is something I hope is cleared up!

If not covered by the skills, the Ranger should have had it as a class feature, rather than some of the worthless stuff they have.

I mean broader, not just favored enemies, that feature is very hit or miss whether it will be of any value in any particular campaign.

Roll Nature to ID. I suppose you could use Arcana for constructs or something. At least that is how I do it.
