A level 20 druid with Circle of the Moon can Wild Shape an unlimited number of times, as a bonus action, turning into a CR 6 beast. He can also expend two uses of Wild Shape to turn into an elemental.

So, each round, I could turn into a different kind of elemental as a bonus action, and each turn I get the HP of that elemental, right?

Yes.

...and it isn't nearly as spectacularly powerful as it might sound at first.

Yes.  It's the best level 20 feature in the game.

But wizards get Wish, and a fighter could probably still kill you with his 4 attacks.  So it's not that far out of line.

Clerics are one of the worst capstones: Yya, I get a DM dependant divine intervention once a week. I'd rather the Sorcerer's 4 sorcery points per rest thanks, at least those are useful, reliable and not 1/week.

To me the best is the barbarian, +4 str and +4 con is the sidekick to unlimited rage-> perma damage reduction to everything except psychic damage. It is exactly what I want from a capstone, let me do more and better what i like to do (as a barbarian, give and get damage)

the worst is cleric 1/week, even if it's something spectacular, hurt too much.

Ranger's capstone sucks badly.

I don't think the ranger capstone sucks if a person enjoys the favored enemy feature. I think not everyone enjoys the feature and it would be nice to have a substitute for them, but the bonus isn't bad even if it is situational.

How can ranger capstone be any good? Since there are any "your wisdom is X"  item, melee ranger will have 14 and ranged maybe 16. So it's basically a +2 (or +3) 1/turn to hit OR to damage  that works only with 3 kind of enemy out of X (too lazy to check). While barbarian get a +2 to hit AND damage always; at level 20 you have at least 2 attack (and i dont count reaction and bonus action) so it's 4x time better than the ranger capstone. And that is only half the barbarian capstone :D

can you explain me how it can EASILY be more than +3 for a melee ranger considering a 27 point build (because in a homebrew game anything can happen).

I know you can start with wis 16 and grab 2 ability increase but unless you have str 20 that is counterproductive. Also if you are raising your wis more than your dex and con something is wrong imho.

Also, again just my opinion, but if 90% of my game is against 3 kind of enemy i'd kindly ask my dm if he could make things more interesting. And remeber that you choose favored enemy at lvl 1, 6 and 10?! (can't remeber). I doubt at level 20 you'll fight many orcs and goblin.

... By using Finesse weapons? Stick a 16 in Dex and a 16 in Wis, done.

If you are happy with a 12 or 14 con and no feats sure, but to get a weak capstone a little less weak you gimp yourself pretty badly (no wis nor con saves proficiency  to list a few)

Barbarians have primal champion and unlimited rages. Bards, warlocks and wizards have true polymorph (permanently becoming something like an ancient white dragon, ancient brass dragon, androsphinx, balor, demilich or pit fiend). Clerics have divine intervention. Druids have archdruid and shapechange. Fighters have extra attack (3) and seven ability score improvements. Monks have perfect self and utility class features. Paladins have sacred oath class features. Rangers have foe slayer. Rogues have stroke of luck and sneak attack (10d6). Sorcerers have sorcerous restoration and wish.

At 20th-level, I consider the classes to belong in the folowing tiers:

Tier 1
Bards, druids, warlocks and wizards.

Tier 2

Barbarians, clerics, fighters and sorcerers.

Tier 3

Monks, paladins, rangers and rogues.

The Monk's capstone is better than the Clerics. Assuming the suggested 2 encounters/rest/2 encounters/rest/2 encounters, the Monk can use his capstone between 0 and 42 times a week. The Cleric? Between 0 and 1. Also note that while it is only 4 ki per initiative, and only if you have 0 ki, that's exactly what's needed to be resistant to all but force damage and be invisible for a whole minute at the cost of a single action. Concentrationlessly.

Divine Intervention is around the power of a level 9 spell with an unwilling DM. Even with a willing DM it's effectively just Wish. And Wish is available 7 times a week.
