Level 3 Paladin MCs Ranger... lose a caster level?

The level 3 paladin was looking at options. He currently has 3 level 1 spell slots. We observed that if he MCs Fighter, he keeps all three spell slots. But if he MCs Ranger, he loses a spell slot and drops to 2.

Am I reading that correctly? Is it really supposed to take away class features when you MC?

Make sure you're comparing the adjusted caster level to the multiclass spell slot table, and yes, adding your half-levels together rather than 1.5 paladin levels (round down) + .5 ranger levels (round down) = 1 instead of 2. Multiclassing casters should not be losing spell slots by multiclassing.

Algebra to the rescue

A = Bard level + Cleric level +  Druid level + Sorcerer level + Wizard level

B = (Paladin level + Ranger level) / 2 (round down)

C = (Fighter level + Rogue level) / 3 (round down, and only if Arcane Trickster or Eldritch Knight)

Multiclass spellcaster level = A + B + C

In your case, a Ranger 3 / Paladin 1 would be multiclass spellcaster level 2.

As others stated,

calculate all fraction of non fullcasters, add them together and then round down.

i.e.

arcane trickster 4, CL 1,333

eldritch knight 7, CL 2,333

ranger 2, CL 1

paladin 3, CL 1,5

sum; 6,166    round down; CL 6, at character level 16

Actually, the RAW is to calculate the caster levels of all spell casting classes.  If you're a level 3 paladin, and a level 1 ranger, you only have one spell casting class, and that is paladin.  Your level cannot be lowered this way.

Ranger only becomes a spell casting class once you hit level 2 as a ranger, so you'd apply the multiclassing rules at this time to the spellcasting feature, as this is the only time you have actually got the feature from two classes.  Otherwise, you treat the feature exactly as if it were from the one single class that has spellcasting.

A Paladin 3/Ranger 1 has 3 first-level spell slots, just like a Paladin 3. This works no matter how you calculate it.

Intent is especially important in rules that are written with some level of vagueness, as is the case with the 5e rules.  Without a clear formula to follow to arrive at conclusions, it helps to ask the designers about their intent when it comes to grey areas in the rules.

There are very few defined terms in 5e.  Many of these definitions, even, are not written very rigorously.

Right. So it looks like there are two “problems” here.

First, they do intermediate rounding on levels. That seems preposterous and there's no real reason for it. I'm confident deciding that is not RAI. But it is definitely RAW.

Second, even with intermediate rounding, there's something odd about the casting classes. They round up. So, looking at the Paladin (or any other partial casting class), if you assumed that he was a multiclass paladin with a single class (roll with me...), you wind up with spell slots precisely one half level behind. So, it's possible that they decided that multi-class casters should have a penalty, but the way it sounds, it's just supposed to be a way of computing the slots all together.

This leads me to believe that they simply should have said, “Add your total casting classes (including a third of ... and half of ...) (round the total result up).”

That would produce answers exactly congruent with all the existing classes and have no odd artefacts that happen as you level.

Well, the level 3 ranger gets CL2 slots. And the level 5 fighter gets CL2 slots. I don't know that I have a serious problem with the total coming out to CL4 slots at that level.

Consider a level 3 ranger and a level 4 paladin. Taken individually, each would give you CL2 slots. And a level 7 of either would get you CL4 slots. RAW, though, you'd wind up with CL3 slots instead. This seems odd, unless the intent was to use rounding to punish MCs.
