Some of us gained spell slots. Do we gain those slots immediately or do we have to rest? Do we get our hit die then or do we rest before getting that back as well. Same with abilities. Would a fighter have to rest before he used action surge the first time or would the weary adventure who just got 300 xp know how to do that. I've scoured the phb and couldn't find anything. Any help would be awesome! |

My party once leved up mid-adventure, and we handled it as everyone gets their new stuff and it's usable immediately. Casters needed to rest in order to prepare new spells, but had immediate access to higher level slots. |

We just finished helping a family when our characters looked up to see people fleeing from the keep and that's when we ended. I'm not sure when the next rest is. Sounds like rest is the general consensus though. I'll show my DM the post and see what he wants to do |

For example, when my druid levelled up and took Fighter as his multiclass I did it specifically to get Fighting Style, Archery - I wanted a druid that had spent time in the wild and was good at archery, as my background showed. There's no way a character suddenly gets +2 at archery mid-adventure, so I role-played that I already had it from my background and went back to shooting things with a bow when a bow became available in the adventure.
This doesn't really answer your original question, but for me, some sort of "logical" (in a heavily magic-laden world!) explanation of new abilities is more important than when they become available. In something like HotDQ, getting those levels ASAP can be the difference between life and death. |

Remember that stress can do weird things, so that sorcerer digs a little deeper and discovers he can now twin spells. That druid archer was always good at archery, but just never had the chance to try it out until now (or maybe never tried it and actually discovered they were very good at it!).
I figure if you're going to give XP battle-by-battle, the least you can do as a DM is level them up, too. Seems kinda rude not too |
