This may just be me, but doesn't the leveling seem a little quick? I obviously come from a 2ed background as this may just be the way it is now. Does anyone have house rules for leveling? I did think 2ed was too long specially for classses like the druid, but this seems like the other ditch to me.

The first 4 levels are considered "apprentice" levels. Levels 1 and 2 specifically were designed to be traversed in approximately 1 session each. Their sole purpose is to allow the player to get used to the rules with only the most basic of class abilities.

At level 3, most classes gain their subclass, and the first of their "true" class abilities. Both the Dev's and a large percentage of the playtesters refer to level 3 as the "new level 1". In fact, it has been stated by the devs on several occasions, that once players have gotten used to the game, they expect most campaigns to begin at level 3.

Leveling in dnd has been faster than 1E/2E ever since the introduction of 3E in 2000, so it has been this way for the past 14 years now. With that being said, the first few levels in 5E are lightning fast compared to even that of 3E or 4E, but this was by design.

We have been told that rules for slower level advancement will be present in the DMG for those gamers who wish to recapture the slower 2E-style leveling. Published adventures however may need to be tweaked if using a slower level advancement, as they assume certain levels at certain break points in the adventure.

That actually makes sense. I am Dming 5e for the first time this weekend and that was the only thing that seemed off. So maybe until the DMG comes out we try it this way. Hey, maybe I/we will prefer it.

Thank you,

It's worth pointing out that while it takes far fewer XP to get from level 1 to level 4 than it did in 3.X (not so sure about 4th), it actually takes *more* XP-per-level after you get to about level 6. Basically the game is designed to take you through the "ordinary joe" levels quite quickly, and keep you in the "seasoned adventurer" levels for a lot longer.

Everyone hates the really low levels, so they wanted to make sure that players got through them quickly.

That's my take on it.

Let's not forget that, as long as your players are okay with this, you can just level up whenever. (I know "DM makes the rules" is the obvious thing to say a lot, but still!)

While campaigning in 3.x, we stuck by xp and gave it out either at the end of the session or start of the next. In 4E, I started that but that later evolved into, "Meh, you guys had some great battles, and next level gives you some really cool options, lemme just level you up." Other DMs took this to the extreme and leveled us up after every session o_O This was probably becuase in 4th you HAD to be of a correct level or get wasted by stuff too high level. Or if you were even 1 level behind the party, you could REALLY feel it (unlike in 3.x), so everyone, even absent people, leveled up simultaneously.

So I may start doling out XP in 5th, since it's similar to 3.x in not needing to be exactly the same level as party members and/or monsters, but I might just go back to saying, "Hey, we've reached 'x' part in the story, and you RP-ed super well. And you got to use basically all the cool stuff you gained last level. So why not level up now?"
