Levitation Attack?!

Can a character who cast a 2nd level Levitate spell on itself during a previous turn attack a target on its next turn (for example, with a ranged weapon such as a bow?) while levitating?! And if so, would this character have advantage given the higher vantage point?

Sure you can attack, even cast other spells, assuming they don't also require concentration.

As for advantage, that is up to your DM, but I would not think so.

The downside is that if you lose concentraion, you fall down and hurt yourself.

So it's risky to use it in battle.

The 5E levitate just floats you down when the spell ends, and you are only 20' up.

Which leads to the question... if you levitate up 20', then push yourself over a pit, so you just keep floating, or do you drop down to 20' above the pit floor?

I would rule that the sudden height difference (the edge of the pit) breaks the Levitation so you drift down to land next to the side of the pit where you started.

(If you have a breeze and a sail out for forward motion, DEX Saves and/or comedy may result.)

I'd say you'd start drifting down, not falling. But that's my ruling as a GM.

I'd probably just give some sort of bonus or advantage to a jump/acrobatics check to leap the pit.

In my opinion and as a GM the spell allows for safe fall distance of the maximum height of the spell. It is not feather fall, you can't cast levitate and then jump off a 300' castle tower and be fine. You would fall any distance greater than the maximum spell height.
