Does the Life Cleric Disciple of Life ability apply to Goodberry?
Disciple of Life: "Also starting at 1st level, your healing spells are more effective. Whenever you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points equal to 2 + the spell's level." (page 60, phb)
Goodberry: Casting time - 1 action, range - touch, components - V,S,M (a sprig of mistletoe), duration - instantaneous. "Up to ten berries appear in your hand and are infused with magic for the duration. A creature can use its action to eat one berry. Eating a berry restores 1 hit point and the berry provides enough nourishment to sustain a creature for one day. The berries lose their potency if they have not been consumed within 24 hours of casting this spell." (page 246, phb)
So I can see 2 ways of viewing this. The first is yes, because the spell makes something that restores hit points. The second is no, because the spell itself doesn't directly restore hit points.
Personally I am in favor of the first.
I came across this when I was looking at making a Human with the Magic Initiate feat while making a cleric. Goodberry is in the druid spell list which is one of the spell lists that you can pull spells from with the feat. |

| #3Rya.ReisenderJul 30, 2015 23:14:21 | Yes, no clear answer on this one yet. It's something that would need clarification through Sage Advice.
Allowing it to work on goodberries make the spell quite... strong. That's pretty much the only reason not to allow it. |
| #4Danny_MontannyJul 31, 2015 5:10:35 | I rule that "healing spells" when it comes to Life Cleric only work with evocations. Goodberry is a transmutation, so it doesn't jive with me. It's not a "healing spell", it's a spell that changes a thing to a different thing (that just so happens to minimally heal you, not to mention having other effects). Healing spells heal, that's all they do. They're direct and serve a singular purpose, that's why the Life Cleric gets their bonus in them. |
| #5jaelisJul 31, 2015 6:02:52 | IMO the best way to play is that each berry heals 1 hp still, but a life cleric makes extra berries when cast.
However we do have from Twitter:

| #6melloredJul 31, 2015 6:18:01 | it's no stronger then the healer feat, which also takes a level to get. |
| #7Lucas_BlackstoneJul 31, 2015 20:28:12 | I don't know why there is an issue with this. The spell creates berries. Once the spell creates the berries, it's done. The spell does no healing. The regaining of hit points comes from eating the berry, not casting a spell. No spell is being used to restore hit points.
Example: Bob the cleric/druid casts Goodberry, and chooses 7 berries ( because 7 is his lucky number ) to appear in his hand. Two hours later, his buddy Elvis the rogue is injured and uses an action to eat a berry. No spell was cast by Elvis, or Bob, so there is no way for Disciple to trigger since it says to use a spell. 1 hp is restored, and Elvis has had enough nourishment for one day. Bob did not use Goodberry to restore those hit points, he used the Goodberry spell two hours previously to the hit points being restored.

| #11ElfcrusherSep 04, 2015 13:04:06 | Honestly I'm surprised at the official response. I would have thought an increase in the number of berries a much better answer. That the way the total healing increases by a proportion similar to other spells. That's how I'll rule it if it ever comes up. |

| #15Rya.ReisenderSep 05, 2015 5:50:18 | Well by default rules recovering between combat is not that hard. Spells, potions, hit dice (short rests), second wind. Unless the situation is very time sensitive you can easily fully heal up after every battle even without goodberries.
In 5e every combat is a battle for life and death and resource-management is less important.
Of course if your DM forbids recovery from long rests, then it makes sense that he also changes the official goodberry rule. |

| #17Rya.ReisenderSep 05, 2015 6:34:40 | It is, but it also requires you to multiclass.
And except for potions, all the rest is basically unlimited resources and they all recover on rests. |

| #43LordCorwinSep 15, 2015 14:37:26 | Comedy doesn't always translate into written mediums I suppose. Mea culpa. |
| #44Macv12Sep 15, 2015 18:15:06 | They are magic. How many calories of energy are involved in the detonation of a fireball? Were they there before?
Of course "calories" aren't all you get from eating, you also need specific things like vitamins and iron. If each berry contains both sufficient energy and sufficient specific nutrients for one day, I suspect getting fat would be the least of your problems. You'd probably more preoccupied with the liver damage, constipation, wonky immune system, poor blood clotting, etc. that tend to follow from getting too much zinc and such. |
