My question is about the lightning arrow ranger spell, here it is;

The initial is 4d8 ok easy enough. The secondary is 2d8 save vs 1/2 and hits all targets within 10ft, does this include the initial target?

My first reading I didn't think so. After speaking with others the verdict is still out. The part that causes the confusion for my group at least is the damage is still dealt on a miss. So the analogy of 4 people standing near one another in a pool while one holds a hot wire meaning he would take X amount and all others Y doesn't really fit because if he were to drop the wire they would ALL take Y. The wording doesn't exclude not support that in my way of reading it. Please some clarification.

From a balance point of view, the secondary burst should include the initial target.

Otherwise it's a pretty crappy spell.

The text looks ambiguous to me, but I'd agree with mellored that the spell is better if you do include the primary target.

I'm not going to weigh in on the balance or whether the spell is "crappy" when read one way or the other.

I will say that reading the language present in the description, there is no reason to think that the secondary damage effect does not include the initial target since it isn't possible to not be within 10 feet of one's self.
