"Asking the creature to harm itself, throw itself onto a spear, immolte itself, or do some other obviously harmful act ends the spell."
The examples here refer to the creature hitting itself except "harmful act". Would attacking another qualify? Would the spell end if the creature took damage?
Thanks! |

| #4UndrhilJan 03, 2015 13:18:30 | What about an enemy spellcaster using Suggestion on a PC and having that PC basically turn against the rest of the party?
We had that happen last Sunday. Our Lawful Good fighter failed the Will save and was told that he was now, basically, supporting the bad guys.
Personally, I think that, of all of the spells which have an initial save, *THIS* spell should have a save after every turn. Some of the other ones which get a save every turn, really don't need it. This one does. It lasts for 8 hours if the initial save is failed. That's 8 hours, potentially, that could ruin a character - reputation, finances, etc. Just for a bad die roll.
Sorry, but I houserule Suggestion as a save every round, if the suggestion is against the character's ... well, character. |
| #5OoftaMegJan 03, 2015 16:27:31 | The suggestion has to be reasonable, I would say that attacking your allies for no good reason is not "reasonable". But it's a DMs call.
Suggesting that the party's rogue has stolen something from you may be reasonable and sow distrust, but unless it's in character doesn't mean you would automatically attack. |
| #6CutlassJan 03, 2015 16:36:49 | Whether or not you could get the enemy mercenary to attack his buddies is doubtful. But if your spell caster were to use Suggestion to get the mercenary to "go home and get some sleep" then you've just taken the mercenary out of the fight. Granted that it's not as nifty as getting him to try to take his buddies on, but it is much more likely to succeed. |
| #7Byakugan01Jan 03, 2015 20:06:09 | The nice thing about being Suggested into joining the bad guys is that bad guys can turn on their bosses. |

| #9Slyck314Jan 06, 2015 11:05:20 | The line you pick can become even more extreme with Mass Sugestion which has a a duration of at least 24 hrs with no concentration required. I have an ultraloth use this on the party telling them that they must flee. Two characters ran until the edge of death. |
| #10SorxoresJan 07, 2015 5:54:15 | The suggestion must be REASONABLE. this is NOT dominate person. you simply really trust what the ennemy spellcaster tell you. No matter how much I trust you if you tell me to attack my best friend (team member) I will probably tell you NO. But if the ennemy spellcaster tell me that his forced to fight for the bad guys and he need protection, then I might grapple my friend who try to attack him and I'll make my best to stop the fighitng without anyone getting hurt (use counterspell to stop any spell from being cast, grapple attacking targets, etc...
The keyword here is REAASONABLE, ask yourself if it's REASONABLE. is it REASONABLE to attack your own team member, if you role play a jerks, then maybe yes, if the rogue is always stealing from the party, then maybe yes, if your an over zealous paladin and the tiefling fiend pact warlock often do shady thing that you don't really appreciate, then maybe yes, but in "regular" team where team members are friendly between each other and work as a team with teamwork, then attacking each other is NEVER REASONABLE.

Suggestion: "Attack the guy standing next to you" Target: "HA - I see through your schemes, trickster."
Suggestion: "Your cause is lost, retreat while you can" Target: *wastes an action looking around and scoping out his line of retreat*
Suggestion: "We are only the first wave; surrender before you are destroyed." Target: *WIS check*
Suggestion: "You aren't being paid enough for this." Target: "Hey, guys, what are we doing here on the cheap?" * Everybody makes WIS check*
Suggestion to mercenary officer: "Our boss wants to offer you a better contract, for your unit to stand aside." Target: *pulls out negotiating table* "TRUCE. Prove it: let's talk."
It wouldn't hurt if you can think up a way to use Deception and/or Persuasion, too.

Does someone think this doesn't involve a subjective evaluation?
The drab thing is where, because it's subjective, the DM doesn't let anything have even a minor effect.
Oh, equally drab : where, because it's subjective, the player expects whatever they say to always work. |
