Or if the OP meant "without" then it's a STR check. |

| #9iserithSep 22, 2014 7:49:20 | An ax and some time will see a wooden door dealt with with no check at all. A crowbar, hammer, chisel and time will see a stone door opened without a check. A captured rust monster in a bamboo cage wheeled up to a metal door will sort it out, no roll.
There's only a need for a roll when there's an uncertain outcome (determined by the DM). |

In 5E anyone can attempt to open a lock. Those with proficiency in thieves tools get to add their proficiency bonus, but anyone can try a dexterity check to open a lock. A locked or barred door, depending upon its quality, fit, and mechanism... may or may not be likely to open. A poor qualify door might have enough space to get a thin dagger through and lift up the bar. A rusted lock you might be able to pour water on and ray of frost it until it cracks. If the hinges are on your side, you might be able to pop the hinges. Even if they are on the other side, depending upon the sill, you might be able to slide some wedges under it and lift it off its hinges. Folks may be able to aid each other, guidance or other spells might help on the attempt, etc.
If you can't make your dexterity check to open the lock/bar... then there is always physical force. A strength check might break the door down. Again, others might be able to aid another, a crowbar might give an advantage. Physical attacks on the door might take it down -- axes, spells, etc. Wooden doors might be easily burned (or at least weakend) using oil, woods/torches, fire-based spells, etc. Stone doors might still be chipped away using a pickaxe, hammers, chissles, etc.
Even if the door is really secure -- metal or something -- the walls and sill may not be. You can still, given time and work, dig through many types of wood, stone, earth, etc. walls given tools.
Certain types of magic might allow you in. Gaseous form, teleporting, dimension door, etc. |
