With the DMG coming it it seems like there will be magical ammunitionin the game. Does this mean if you are using a bow how does this work with things immune to non magical weapons?

Does a +1 bow count as a magical weapon or does the ammunition have to be magical/. Does +1 ammunition stack with +1 bows?

Does anyone know? Right now I am ruling the ammunition has to be magical to bypass resistence or immunity.

Dude...it will be explained in the DMG. May as well as how poisons work o_O

Either wait or make it up!

Anything else is pure speculation!

For what it's worth, I believe magic ranged weapons are useless if you rule that it doesn't bestow its magic on the ammo. Unless you swing it like a club or something. That's why the best way to rule it is to either have both effects happen (maybe you can say the +x's don't stack, and it just takes the greater one) so you can have an +2 Explosive bow shoot a +1 Arrow of Dragonslaying and have it act as a +3 (or +2) Explosive Arrow of Dragonslaying. OR! You have the player pick when they shoot. They'll likely pick the ammo, though, because why shoot the magic arrow if its magic isn't going to work...

not sure how it will work in this edion, I go with KISS ... weapon + adds to hit amunition + adds to damage

My money is on it working like 4e.

magical bows add enchantment to the arrows fired, i see no reason why it would change in this edition.

From what I vaguely recall.

1st and 2nd E AD&D: Requires Ammo to be magical.

3E: Depends upon ammo... although I might be misremembering this.

3.5E and 4E: Depends upon weapon.

I vaguely expect it will be weapon, not ammo based.

Creatures are immune/resistant to attacks from non-magical "weapons".

According to the rules there is no reason to have the magic of the ranged weapon transfer to the ammuntion. Resistance/Immunity applies to damage fron non magic weapons. The ammuntion does not do damage, the bow does. The ammuntion simply limits if you can attack or not and in some cases, depending on the loading feature, the number of attacks you can make in a round with a given ranged weapon.

For example if you look at the damage for an arrow, you will not find any listed in the PHB. But if you look for weapons that happen to use arrows as ammuntion, you find damage listed there. So if you have a magic bow, and attack with it, you have done piercing damage with a magic weapon.

Yes, we all know that the arrow is what is hitting the target. I do not believe is is the weapon being used for the attack, but instead it is the ammuntion, and the weapon being used is the bow.

For the purposes of the attack, could the ammunition be considered part of the weapon?

I would say bows transfer some of their magic to the arrow. As others have said, simpler and opens up the possibility of fun things like flame bows that shoot fiery arrows.

I imagine that magical amunition will simply have defined magical effects that are different from an attack roll.

Weapons impart their ench bonus to attack and damage rolls using that weapon, regardless of that weapon's weapon properties (of which Ammunition is one,) so it's unlikely we'll see an accuracy/damage split with magic amunition. I feel like it's more probable that magical ammunition will make the bow able to perform an action it cannot otherwise manage, such as allowing a bow to shoot a 5 foot sphere fire attack that imparts a dex save (exploding arrow.)
