If you are playing with the Human Variant and Feats.  In theory you could take the Magic Initiate Feat and the same Spell casting class.  While it may seem redundant, is this a way to have access to more Cantrips and Spells at 1st level?

I don't see why not.

It seems like it would be no different than a Battle Master Fighter taking Martial Adept feat. It does not seem to powerful, I also do not see anything not allowing it either so, yeah id say go for it.

Yes, except that the 1st level spell you choose doesn't get added to your spells known/prepared.

So a Human Sorc could pick up Mage Armor with the feat and cast it 1/day, but he can't cast it using spell slots unless he chooses it as a spell known.

Similarly, the feat doesn't give you a 'slot' to cast the spell so you can't use it to cast other spells you know.  You just gain the ability "Cast Mage Armor 1/day"

Also of note, since it's not a spell slot, you can't do sorcerer spell slot things to it.

You also can't cast it at a higher level.

I tend to describe the Magical Initiate feat as granting the character 2 Cantrips, and a 1/day spell-like ability, as it reminds me of the SLAs from 3.X

Yes, it's wholly possible, and (particularly for variant humans a 1, as usual) can be a very good feat for a caster.

Also worth noting, however, is that grabbing a pair of cantrips from a different casting class can be even better. Most of the classes have a couple of cantrips that are better than the rest, and knowing that you can access more of the best of what the system has to offer is well worth considering for the caster who really wants versatility.

I might also suggest that the Magic Initiate spell *might* count as an additional spell known/prepared. I don't have chapter and verse on this, but all *other* sources of spells are treated as interchangeable in this way (a Warlock/Cleric can, if I understand correctly, cast Cleric spells with Pact Magic). I'd assume that the one-use-per-day of that spell would be fixed, but I see no reason that the spell shouldn't go into your spells known the same way spells from all other sources do.

I treat the first level spell as an SLA which refreshes on a long rest as well. It's separate from the normal casting abilities of the class, and I think that the rules support that interpretation pretty well.
