Magic Items in 5e

Has there been any indication of the relative power level of enchanted weapons in 5e?  In particular, in regards to "plus weapons" (+1 through +5).  With the relatively smaller target numbers on AC and attack bonuses (20th level fighter +6 as opposed to old school +20) is a +2 or +3 magic item going to be "too tough" (let alone +4 or +5+).

Was there a sneak peek from the DMG on this?

Appreciate any input, thanks!

Download the free DM guidelines pdf at the WotC site. It lists items as +1 through +3 in this edition.

From the Basic DM Guide

http://media.wizards.com/2014/downloads/dnd/DMBasicRulesv.0.3.pdf

Weapons and armour are +1/+2/+3

I believe there is far less expectation on having a certain amount of magic items/level.

As in the game maths doesn't "expect it", although there is apparently still maybe some magic item/level and wealth/level guidelines in the DMG (we'll see in a few weeks...)

So even +1 weapons are kinda quite a big thing.

Probably the most important factor isn't the bonus to hit or damage but overcomming non-magical damage resistance & immunity.

I would suggest OP read other forums on this topic. There are some really great ideas, including things like +0 weapons, or items which specific triggers (such as +0/+2 versus X, Y, Z creatures).

I've been fond of weapons that bestow non-martial abilities, such as a one that could detect lies, or serve as a torch, or something like that. Flair!

If you want to convert plussed magic items it's best to do some math.

If the item is coming from an edition where the max plus is 5 or 6 then halve the plus on the items and round up, that means +1/+2 become +1, +3/+4 become +2, +5/+6 become +3

If the item is coming form a max +10 then follow this formula +1 to +4 = +1, +5 to +8 = +2, +9 to +10 = +3

Anything with properties beyond plusses should be converted the 5e version, which usually strips any plusses and just leaves the other properties.

Some items probably shouldn't be converted and should either be dropped or replaced with a similar 5e item (the DMG will be out soon so it'll be easier to make case by case conversions).

on top of plusses another area that's seen some noted changes is Attribute bonus items. Instead of granting plusses in a stat they instead provide a fixed attribute as long as the wearer doesn't already have that score or higher.

Items with various resistances would now just provide flat resistance to that source of damage or advantage to saves against the damage.

Damage reduction items would likely go away or if powerful DR/MR could instead provide resistance to physical or magical damage (but keep in mind that this can be really strong at higher levels).

I would also divide all +'s in half.
