so I have this magic greatsword (sword of wounding) for my paladin who is... well, pretty speced out for shield usage. I was already planning on going into warlock for other reasons, but i'm wondering if the pact of the blade feature can change the form of the greatsword so that it's a longsword. There doesn't seem to be a specific ruling either way, but there are arguments online for and against being able to do this. The argument for is that you gain the other benefeits, assumably (such as having proficiency with it), that the weapon is "transformed", meaning it may have changed more integrally than just being "indexed as" your pact weapon, and the fact that it doesn't specifically restrict you from doing so; if everything you could possibly do was explicitly laid out for you, the PHB would be about 900 times as big as it is. the argument against is that when you summon a magic weapon that is your pact weapon, "IT", as in "the weapon that you transformed into your pact weapon" appears, and that chosing the form occurs when you "create" a weapon, and having a magic weapon causes it to "appear" from elsewhere.
additional thoughts:
if you can transfrom a magic weapon into a new form, i assume it would be restricted to what that magic weapon can be, ie my sword of wounding must be "any sword" and thus could not be a hammer, or a "berserker's axe" could go from battle axe to greataxe to hand axe, arguably to halberd, but can't be a rapier or whip.
similarly, if you transformed a +1 bow into your pact weapon, if you can't change the form you would not be able to summon it; pact weapon says "you chose the form that this melee weapon takes", indicating that it can't be a ranged weapon, but there is no restriction on what can be "transformed" into your pact weapon. This might be circumvented by the "create" versus "summon" thing, but there seems to be no clear distinction. |
