Magical throwing weapons, do they return automatically or not?

Can't find anything about it in the player handbook.

One would imagine that such a special property, if it applies to the item, would be included in the item's description. We'll probably not know for sure until the DMG comes out.

I know fer dang sure that making all magical throwing weapons "returning" ain't gonna happen at my table. That's an extra bit of yummy, not a baseline state. A +2 dagger is one thing; a +2 returning dagger is another, better, thing.

Gotcha. I wasn't that into 4e, so I didn't know that. Thanks! :D

Magical thrown weapon don't return after each attack unfortunatly like 4E. IIRC There was a returning weapon in the playtest at some point that did though.

To my knowledge, one of the following two statements must be true in order for the weapon to return.

  • You are an Eldritch Knight and have bonded with the weapon. You can return the weapon to your hand as a bonus action.
  • The weapon has the returning property (or its 5E equivalent). We have yet to see the DMG regarding this.

Given the fact that auto-returning weapons would overlap with the EK ability, and given how unpopular an auto-returning mechanic would be with the oldschool gaming crowd, I highly doubt we will see a return of the 4E style returning property in 5E (all magical weapons have the returning property baked in).

Not gonna lie, that was one of the few things I really liked about 4E o_O
