Martial Arts with a thrown weapon?

The entry for Martial Arts in the Monk class states:  At 1st level, your practice of martial arts gives you mastery of combat styles that use unarmed strikes and monk w eapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don’t have the two-handed or heavy property.

 

So, does this mean that I can wield a handaxe (a simple weapon which does not have the two-handed or heavy property) and take advantage of the benefits of Martial Arts if I throw the Handaxe?

Conceivably.  I would definitly say yes, but that's just my personal ruling.  Of course, I'd also let it apply to darts as if they were shuriken and thrown daggers as if they were kunai.  Again though, that's just my personal interpetation.

I would also say yes; and that shurikens most closely resemble darts. But, darts would not qualify as monk weapons, as they are not simple melee weapons.

A DM could allow that as one interpretation of the wording or he might only allow the hand axe if use in melee since it does specify melee weapon or they might say that a weapon with a throwing range is not a melee weapon so no hand axes.

 

Check with your DM and ask how he views this. Keep in mind this version is about rulings not rules so each table can adjust based on how they play.

Martial Arts is restricted to proc off of an attack with a monk weapon or unarmed strike, but not it clearly says attack and not MELEE attack. So daggers, handaxes, and throwing hammers seem okay to toss and then you can punch someone in the face, because they're MELEE weapons (to fulfill the Monk Weapon requirement) you can also throw. Conceivably, you can throw your weapon, run up, and then punch them in the face! Seems legit.

 

In the same vein, Flurry of Blows is actually LESS restrictive, because you just need to use the attack action; no restrictions on what weapon you use. So feasibly you can attack with a longbow (as an elf), then run up and punch them in the face, twice!

Oddly, deflect missile counts as a monk weapon as well.  Though i don't see any interaction with that.
