Maximum hit points

Ran into a situation where a Druid's maximum hit points were reduced by a clay golems special attack. The Druid's maximum hit points were reduced to 10. When he wild shapes into a beast with say 37 hit points, does he get 37 or 10?

37. You get the beast's HP regardless of whether it's higher than yours or not - for instance, if I'm a fragile, 8-Con 1st level druid, I have 4 HP, and nothing stops the druid from shifting into something with 10 HP.

The druid's maximum HP gets replaced with the animal's while in beast form, but the druid's maximum HP is still reduced when it returns to normal. If he fully healed without removing that HP reduction, then wild shaped, he'd be really fragile if the wild shape fell due to taking overwhelming damage.

At least, that's my reading.

I agree. And if the beast form got it's max hp reduced, that wouldn't affect the druid when wildshape ended.

Agreed. The HPs are independant of each other. What affects one, does not the other.

I'd probably go with the fact that the condition isn't removed by the polymorph effect. The 10 HP damage won't transfer between forms, but the effect of the max HP being reduced would. So neither of the options presented in the OP.

I went with the first option during game play, but after the session it was bothering me that an effect that can only be removed by a 5th level Greater Restoration spell could be so easily removed temporarily by wild shape. Not going to reverse the decision but will keep that in mind if it happens again. The hard rules point one way but magic points another.

It can't "easily be removed by polymorph" though. Most shapechanging effects (i.e. Shapechanger) don't change your statistics. Only ones that expressly say they replace your current and maximum HP do that - and if you're knocked down to about 3 HP in a morph, and then a Fireball hits you for 30 damage, the 37HP normal version of you would have survived, but the 10HP version of you is toast.

polymorph is also not a permenant solution, it is a temporary one, and as mentioned above damage rolls over, so in short think of the polymorph HP as if it were temp HP.

You get more of it ontop of whatever you have maximum normally but once it is gone it is gone.

It seems to keep druid HP and beast HP seperate, so I guess the max HP reduction is seperate as well.
