Misty Step

Sorry if this has been asked, but a search of Misty Step doesn't return any recent threads, so here goes...

Does Misty Step allow a character to carry any weight, specifically another person, when they teleport?

I would rule not, because a carry is not mentioned whereas one is in Dimension Door (4th-level), and the Misty Step spell description says "you" teleport, without any mention of extra weight.

That said, if a character was carrying something in his hand when he teleported I would have it go with him.

What do you think, or is this a DM-call thing?

"Doesn't say you can't" isn't usually considered good form at the table. But it's not us who's running your table - it's your DM.

Definitely up to your DM.  It's one thing to teleport with items you are holding or even a small animal, another thing entirely to take another person.

I might allow it under certain circumstances.  If you could carry the person without encumbering yourself, for example or if it was appropriate story wise such as spending an inspiration to carry an unconscious ally to safety.

Yes, I would probably allow it for an incapacitated creature, but not in general.

It's actually 'rule of cool' that even makes me consider going with it (I am the DM) - the party is trying to kidnap a potential enemy (they're not sure if she is, or not) and the warlock wants to grab (grapple) her and then Misty Step out of there. Sounds cool, so I'll probably let it go for the narrative's sake, but was just wondering if there is something RAW about doing so.

I would say that they can carry some reasonable amount of gear, since the spell isn't called "Instant Nudity", and maybe a particularly small creature like a familiar.  The exact amount that is reasonable would be up to the DM.

As a general judgement (were I the DM), I'd say that it can accomodate things that you can easily hold, like a weapon, shield, or similar item, but not particularly large or bulky items or items that are attached to something else.  Similar for creatures; a small kitten might be allowable, but not your burly half-orc buddy.

If it helps in your judgement, in previous versions of the game teleport-type spell's made a very definite distinction between carrying gear and carrying passengers.

Anyone teleported could bring (non-living) gear up to their carrying capacity, but could only take passengers if the spell said so, and the number of passengers was based on caster level (modified by the size of the creatures).

Misty Step=no passengers

Other teleport-type spells=passengers only if it says so

Also, the spell has a Range of "Self"; which the rules state "only affect you", unless they are Area of Effect spells that originate from you.

I'd have to agree; no passengers unless the spell description specifically allows for them. Familiars, animal companions, etc. are often the exception because they're magically bonded to the PC, but even then, it's usually noted by a class feature that specifically says they share spells.

In the case of capturing an unwilling victim via teleportation, IF the spell allows someone to be carried, I'd allow an unwilling "teleportee" a saving throw, possibly with penalties if they were being grappled. I might also impose saving throw penalties if the caster had some sort of arcane bond or link, similar to the modifiers for scrying. Interesting as that idea is, it might be unbalancing -- use your own judgement.

And if the victim is a spellcaster and not completely off guard, they might get a chance to use Counterspell.

considering that misty step is the "go to safety" spell of the caster.

- You are grappled by the ennemy; misty step away.

- You are tie up to a burning stake; misty step away,

- You are in the middle of melee combat; misty step away.

If the spell would bring other people with you it would defeat the purpose (I don't want to teleport with the guy grappling me, I don't want to teleport with the burning post to which I'm tied up etc...)

So by default I would say no you can't. But if it bring something to the story, (I like the idea to consume the inspiration token) then go for it, remember as a DM your role is to help the player to create a cool story not to TPK the party.
