Monster abilities(Undead)

Hi all, if a creature is able to raise the dead as Zombie and he has Zombies with him in a fight against PC's and the PC's kill the zombies could the creature use the dead zombies to raise them up as new/healed zombies? I'm looking at a Zombie Lord conversion to 5e from RQ1 Ravenloft adventure.

If the DM rules that the dead zombie still counts as a corpse, then sure. For me that would depend on how it was killed, but most of the time it would be fine.

Back in the 3.5 days, it used to be that "If an undead is reduced to 0 hit points, it is destroyed", meaning it couldn't be reanimated again. If the undead was ever resurrected, it had to willingly return to life, not merely be brought back to un-life.

Hmm, if I recall, the animate dead spell itself requires humanoid corpses. I suppose that if you kill a zombie, it's now an undead corpse instead.

I would just have it work as:  if the zombie dies because of a critical hit or radiant damage / holy source damage (just to make it easier to achieve) the zombie can't be raised again.  However, if that's not the case, the zombie can be raised again.

I had a Necromancer in one of my groups he was a follower of Weejas who was Lawful nuetral, his faith dictated that corpses could only be raised if the dead had given "permission" to use their bodies in such ways. He carried around 2 full runes skeletons that he used to raise everyday as his minions, took us ages to find that loophole around the "necromancer=evil" precept)
