Monsters and immunities.

I have just read a little about Monster manual, I have a player who is a Lycanthrope (Werebear) and "now" (D&D 5th) he is immune to B, P and S damage from nonmagical weapons that aren't silvered.

Then I have been reading others Monsters, dragons... the tarrasque, some demons and devils... , others lycanthropes, ... etc. I have realized that few monsters have magical attacks or "elemental" damage like fire.

So... for instance I have been thinking... a Werebear never can defeat another Werebear... unless the DM (me) give him/her a magical weapon... a tarrasque can't damage a werebear with his/her normal attacks, only swallowing the Werebear? Furthermore my player is inmune to falling damage, isn't he?

And so on some monsters VS others monsters, and it is very strange for me that the natural weapons of a dragons (or others monster so powerful) don't count as magical weapons.

Am I missing something?

Is my player a "semigod" if I don't change monster from monster manual a little?

Thank you and sorry for my English!

Well in this edition, the PC's aren't supposed to be playing monster races since they can be very powerful compared to the races normally available.  You've run into the whole problem of doing it.  I would recommend you make a custom race instead which you can balance with your player so that he isn't basically immune or resistant to a whole bunch of damage types.  Maybe once the DMG comes out, it'll have templates for converting a monster race into a PC playable one?  Who knows.

Damage immunity is actually pretty rare: Note that even the Pit Fiend and Balor only have resistance to non-magical weapons.

It is kinda odd the Lycanthropes get it so early.

As Noctaem said, they're not exactly designed as player characters.

Alot of monsters do another damage type when they hit (e.g. fire, necrotic)

On a side note, Magic Weapon is an extremetly useful 2nd level spell.

Potential ways to make the werebear possible: Barbarian and Moon Druid.

For Barbarian they don't HAVE to stick to "Bear" totems, but could be handy. Maybe them swinging their claw or biting has the same damage as a greataxe. When they rage they transform or go Hybrid form or whatever.

For Moon Druid, don't pigeon-hole them into ONLY taking bear forms. When they transform, they can slightly shape their body to be a sleek bear (Tiger), a great bear (Brown Bear), a bear great with great claws for climbing (Spider), that sorta thing. Tiny forms used for utility might be a bit harder to fluff, though...You can also use Land Druids, but Moon Druid is sorta easier.

Or! You make a custom-ish race, and rule that they managed to find some gypsy woman who got rid of his vulnerability to Silver, but this also took away his immunity. In fact, the process was so powerful that maybe it made him sterile (so he can't procreate to make more True Lycans) and he can't spread the Curse via biting!

Is he a hemi-demi-semigod if you leave him as-is using the Monster Manual? No way! Will he outshine the rest of the players into unusefulness? Probably...

Finally, let's not forget that things like Dragons have, you know, dragon hoards full of treasure. That includes magic items/weapons. Oh, and a breath weapon. And Lair actions. And the ability to pick up the werebear, fly off into the sunset, and drop him in a volcano (or drown him, whichever is easier). And that's BEFORE we get to the Variant dragons who are spellcasters...

As DM fiat, you could also look to earlier editions where such resistance/immunities were ignored by creatures having the same.  So, two werewolves could duke it out under that understanding.

Also keep in mind that:

  1. The spell magic weapon is a first level spe
  2. Silvered weapons aren't that expensive.

These are optoins that orgainized opposition would certainly bring to bear against a persistent enemy like a werebear adventurerr.

Thank you guys!

You all are helping me and my campaing a lot!

When I beat this munchking player I will come back to the forums to report it hehehe (I really don't care very much about munchking players, a DM can manage them easily :P). It will be a surprise for my players when they see some Devils all with silvered weapons and with magic natural weapons thanks to some wizards hehehe.

And I have take a good decision thank to you guys, I am going to adapt monsters from the monster manual if I need it. I like RAW (rules as writen) but monsters are intelligent (the most of them, and more than me ;D).

Thanks and sorry for my English again!

I was just joking a little!

I am really a "mum" DM, I don't like that my PJs die, only if they make enough mistakes to deserve his/her death.

I opened this thread because I was a bit missed/lost about how to face this PJ without affect the others.

And he is a Werebear because in an adventure they face a "clan/guild" of werebear and 4 of them was infected but he didn't accept the cure... munchking... hehe, but he is roleplaying well his new condition, so I don't want to force him to be cured.
