Mounted Combat?

Page 198 of the PHB under Controlling a Mount states:

"The initiative of a controlled mount changes to match yours when you mount it. It moves as you direct it, and it has only three action options: Dash, Disengage, and Dodge."

If you look at the Warhorse description of the Warhorse on p.311, it lists Trampling Charge which talks about using a Hoof Attack.

I'm assuming that much like the Warlock Pact of the Chain that allows you to use your action so that a familiar can attack, you could sacrifice your action to make your mount attack, but it doesn't specify that in the rules. Thoughts?

While i may not be intended for the warhorse to only make hoof attack when not mounted, as written it seems pretty clear it cannot while mounted, since the only 3 actions it can take are Dash, Disengage, and Dodge.

Mounted combat is even more grey than that:

  • What level of intelligence determines if a mount is intelligent enough to act independently?
  • What designates whether a mount is trained to accept a rider?
  • Who determines what an independent mount does? The DM? The Player?

I don't mind a bit of vagueness in the rules, but this needs to be clarified a little.

The grey points so far are not a problem imo.  I get that people like codified rules, but whether a mount is intelligent enough is clearly a DM call, similarly if it is trained to ride a mount.

My question is how riding a mount interacts with the rangers animal companion.  The Ranger section says "though it doesn't take an action unless you command it too.  On your turn, you can use your action to verbally  command it to take the attack, dash, disengage, dodge, or help action"  Where as the mount section says it has three action options: dash, disengage, and dodge.  (Safe assumption that they are the the companion's own action).

So riding your own animal companion as a mount, does it lose the ability to take its own action, but gain the ability do more actions?  Does it retain its own (restricted) action and also you can give it one of your own?  Or does it keep its own action and cannot attack or help.  Anyone have any relevant insight?

I tried tweeting Mike Mearls to clarify the Mounted Combat rules, but no response.

I have a few questions to add to this one also. Does the mounts actions count as the riders actions? Can the mount Use Dash and the rider then attack? On another note if the mount uses disengage wouldn't the rider still provoke and opportunity attack on the way out unless they also used engage?

I would allow a PC to use an action to use animal handling to coax the warhorse to attack/trample. So not guaranteed but with decent "horse riding skills" the rider can make it happen. If anything it's probably UP, as you give up your action for a chance that the horse will attack. Maybe adv on the check if your horse has been with you a long time, etc.

Allow me to add another question to this mounted combat issue.

A paladin with the Protection fighting style is mounted on a large-sized riding horse. For purposes of the Protection reaction, on that large-sized mount, is the paladin considered to be occupying all of the large mount's squares/space? Or, do we make the paladin declare, of the large mount's four squares, which one the paladin is occupying?

I can't find any language that addresses this in the rules.

Any thoughts?

Happy gaming.
