Then on my turn, can I still attack normally by gripping the weapon again with both hands?
If I am wielding two weapons or a weapon and a shield, can I cast shield as a reaction by dropping a weapon so I have a free hand and then casting the spell? Then on my turn, can I pick up that weapon off the ground and attack normally?
Do I get to know whether or not casting shield would block an attack before I decide whether or not to cast it? |

Yes, but someone might pick it up before you. Think about getting the War Caster feat.
That's up to your DM. Though I'd consider it bad faith not to tell the PCs the number on the hit roll just to have them waste their resources. |
