| #1villamovAug 21, 2014 21:03:15 | Can someone clarify something for me? Are ability score increases based on class or character level? For instance, would a Fighter 3/Wizard 1 have to wait until it you take the 4th level of fighter to get an ability bonus?
Also, since cantrips scale in damage now, does the scaling level indicate casting class level or character level? I don't see it specified.
Thanks. |

ABIs are granted at specified levels in each classes description, making them class abilities. This is a change from 3.X, where feats were granted to all characters at the same rate.
Cantrips scale with character level. The Cantrip of a Wizard 1/Fighter 19 will be identical to that of a Wizard 20 - ignoring class abilities/feats which may improve it.

It is for this reason that cantrips scale with character level, why mc spellcasters pool their spellcasting classes to determine their total spell slots, and why many spells have scaling effects, rather than being listed as separate (but largely identical) spells of different levels. |
