RAW doesn't seem to rule that out as clearly as one might imagine. Consider having multiple cars. Multiple cars could mean a mini and a volkswagon, but could also mean a mini and a mini: both would be multiple cars. And so far as I can see, nothing actually breaks if one allows Wiz/Wiz. In fact, the rules seem to tolerate that quite well.
OTOH I feel like RAW does envision the classes being different. The examples point to that. But I want to point out that the words "your new class cannot be the same as your old class" do not appear. What do others think? |

EDIT: Here's the relevant line from the book: Emphasis mine. |

Which traditions were you thinking of mixing? Or was it more of a thought experiment? |

A Level 12 wizard might be 8 levels in evotaion and 4 levels in illusion - or whatever. If the DM wants to allow multiple spell schools. |

Also, since the inception of Multiclassing across any system i've played you've never been able to Multiclass into your current class. Maybe there is a system out there that you can do this in but i'd be hard pressed to find one. I know no edition of D&D has ever allowed it nor has Pathfinder. The devolopers probably just felt it wasn't needed for a clear RAW statement.
Like i said though. With some work and discussion so many things are doable in D&D that you and your DM just need to sit and chat to make a balanced system for combining different schools of magic. Perhaps a Home brew feat of some sort that allows you to pick another school. Or maybe just a "Generalist" that dabbles in each of the schools and has neat abilities. |

In that, you can take multiple archtypes, or whatever they call them, in the same character class as long as there is no conflict in the benefits they provide or standard ablilties they swap out.
