Multiple maneuver/superiority dice sources

Now that the spell-less ranger has been added and brings some of the Battle master class features with it, how does it react with the original archetype if you were to multiclass both?

Do you combine all maneuvers and superiority dice? Or is it treated like the Martial Adept feat where in you gain the maneuvers but only an additional die? And then on top of that, if you take the Fighter to level 10+, does the Battle Master ability take all your superiority dice to D10/12 or only the ones gained from Fighter?

So would a Fighter 10/ Ranger 10 have this:

Maneuvers: 11 (7 Fighter/ 4 Ranger)

Dice: 10 Dice (5 Fighter/ 5 Ranger) - all D10's or D10/D8

Just like the feat, the dice are added together. Unlike the feat, the spell-less ranger dice don't increase with the Battle Master dice.

Since it's an unearthed arcana, there is no offical rule.

But IMO:

Allow any manuver to be used with any die.   Only 1 per attack.

Keep the fighter dice and ranger dice seperate.

Variant rules are notorious for requiring rulings, due to their lack of universal support and time in the development queue.

The simplest solution, I think, is Mellored's. The ranger's dice don't scale up in the same way as the battle master's, unlike the Martial Adept feat in a PHB-only game, so it helps to keep them separate.

The only extra ruling you'll need is if such a multiclassed character takes the Martial Adept feat. My suggestion is to add one superiority die to either class (pick one; it'll probably be battle master).

I wouldn't have a problem with them scaling up with Fighter dice. It would be late game.

Paladin/Warlock or Cleric/Warlock can use short-rest-recharging Warlock spell slots to power Divine Smites and Cure Wounds.

A College of Lore Bard multiclassed at the right time with any other spell casting class can learn 8th and 9th level spells that normally you would never get if you multiclassed. Making a Bard 6, Sorceror 6, Cleric 6 being able to cast spells that normally only a Cleric 18 or Sorcerer 18 would know.

Warlock with a level of druid and cleric can drop 3 recharging spell slots right before any short rest to create 30 goodberries that heal 4 hitpoints each that last for 24 hours. They can use up all their spell slots before a long rest that will create 30 berries that lest through the rest of the day. They can take 3 hours worth of short rests at the beginning of the day to create 360 hitpoints worth of healing to be used between fights.

The Battlemaster level 10 doesn't say your Fighter superiority dice turn into d10s. All your superiority dice turn into d10s. It is not consistent to squash Fighter/Ranger feature synergy while allowing other multiclasses to have nearly broken combinations.

The Fighter/Ranger using d10s instead of d8s for maneuvers doesn't strike me as disruptive to game flow. (Average of 1 extra damage or 5% extra chance to hit with Accurate Strike)

Probably does less damage than Fighter/Rogue anyway.

So... what is the logic for not treating them the same.

You get Superiority dice from Battle Master

You get Superiority Dice from Martial Initiate

You get Superiority Dice from Ranger (spell-less)

Why are the first two 'the same' but not the third?  I could see letting *only* the BM dice scale, but I can't see allowing BM and MI but not Ranger...

I can see somewhat of a 'balance' issue, but not a RAW one, and not even sure if the balance one is valid...
