| #1Darkend_SorrowNov 19, 2014 7:15:28 | How would a necromancer create a Beholder zombie,Ogre zombie or a minotaur skeleton, warhorse skeleton because the rules seem to say undead you create have to be medium or small humanoids? |
| #2iserithNov 19, 2014 7:25:03 | The player states that he wishes to create those undead abominations and explains how (if he knows). The DM then decides if it works, doesn't work, or may/may not work (and is deserving of an ability check). If the necromancer doesn't know how to create those monsters, he can try Research as a downtime activity. This may reveal (at the DM's choice) that special materials, rituals, or the like need to be acquired by means of adventure.
The DM can also just say that these monsters are not available to necromancer characters. That would be unfortunate, but possible. If you're the DM, I recommend turning anything not specifically covered by the rules (as is the case here) into an opportunity for adventure, the successful completion of which results in the necromancer getting what he wants. |
| #3BRJNNov 20, 2014 7:10:38 | You might be able to create all that (I'd rule it takes more time/money/components for the bigger size categories) but I would NOT give you all the cool powers the live creature had. Your undead ogre or minotaur can be stronger than an undead orc - and carry a great big scary weapon - but the beholder will not get the eye rays, and the warhorse won't be running at 40 mph while carrying the Necromancer+equipment plus barding on its back. |

But the DMG is suppose to bring the rule to create new spells.
and like iserith said, nothing is stoping you from telling your necromancer to use X downtime to do his research to find what need to be done for that kind of spell, then send him on an adventure to gather the piece of forbidden lore that cannot be found at the local wizard academy library, then an other adventure for rare component, then ... and remember to tell him to not use disintegrate to kill the beholder or he loose the body. |
