Negative Hit Points

In the Basic PDF section on Instant Death, it states that "When damage reduces you to 0 hit points and there is damage remaining, you die if the remaining damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum."

Then, under Falling Unconscious, it states: "If damage reduces you to 0 hit points and fails to kill you, you fall unconscious. This unconsciousness ends if you regain any hit points."

Does this mean that Negative Hit Points are only counted if they take you to negative your hit point maximum (which kills you outright), otherwise, you are assumed to have zero hit points and be unconscious? Or does this mean that if a hit knocks you unconscious and you takes you negative, but doesn't kill you outright, that negative score is kept track of in case you receive additional damage that might take you to negative your hit point maximum and kill you?

The section on healing states: "When a creature receives healing of any kind, hit points regained are added to its current hit points." Woudl that mean you could have negative hit points and the healing would start from there, or that healing would start from zero HP if you were unconscious?

My group is just a bit confused by the wording.

Thank you.

From my understanding, they did away with negative hp. Your either alive, unconscious and stable, unconscious and bleeding out, or dead.

Unless the foe is specifically trying to knock you out, when an attack takes you to 0 hp you are unconscious and bleeding out which means until stabilized each consecutive turn is used making a Death Save. 3 failures = dead, 3 successes = stable, and neither have to be consecutive.

if you take damage while stable, I think you start the bleed out process. If you are already bleeding out and take damage then it's a Death Save failure. 2 failures if it was a crit. This is assuming the damage didn't meet or exceed your max hp, in which case you die immediately.
