No love for the nymph?

Love the new MM. Beautiful book, wonderful art. But... no nymph?  

 

Any idea for a home brew 5th edition nymph?

 

(They could have added another monster by not needlessly duplicating the entire beholder entry for the undead skull-version.)

...is nymph really a monster that people got a lot of use out (in game - I'm not talking about ogling the art) in the past?

 

I've never felt motivated to use one in my own adventure writing, nor have I ever encountered a published module that includes one.

 

If I did use a nymph, I'd probably treat it more like a hazard than a combat - you approach, catch sight of the nymph, you save to resist blindness, and the nymph dimension doors to safety.

My bet is that the nymph has some rather sexist overtones that are best left out of any officially published materials.

 

The only time I've seen a nymph in an adventure was in Dungeon 29, "The Nymph's Reward." I found a summary here. I DMed this one in high school and remember enjoying it though reading the summary tells me I'd probably think it sucks if I read it again today.

4e had some really good, non-sex-monster versions of the nymph. I hope they bring back those variants instead of the earlier "charms and/or blinds you with her nakedness" nymphs of previous editions.

Yes, the designers seem to be deliberately moving away from 'fanservice monsters' as part of an overall plan to appeal to a broader gaming audience. It's a good plan.

Nymphs will be part of the NC-17 rated splat book scheduled for release in 2016. Rating is due to the graphic and sexual nature of the commissioned artwork.

Yeah, either the Nymph makes you blind, charms you, or you shoot her with an arrow. You don't really need stats for that. Just use some sort of NPC husk with those powers and you're golden.

Reading Timborama's post made me think that a medusa would be a good base for the nymph, just swap out one save or suck effect for another.  For the full nymph effect, I would probably add a couple of levels of lore bard or fey pact warlock
