| #1ChristopherGrovesAug 29, 2014 11:35:33 | Vampiric Touch ... concentration, 1 minute max. Also "until the spell ends you can make the attack again on each of your turns as an action".
Fighters get extra attacks on actions.
PRESUMABLY, Vampiric Touch is limited to a single attack each turn ("the attack"), but also presumably you can make additional attacks if you have Extra Attack from somewhere - so like smack someone with a weapon. I was staring at Fighter (w/ Necro at least 2), but I'd suppose this also works for Warlocks w/ the blade shtuff.
Anyone dug into these at all? |
| #2NimrodVanHallAug 29, 2014 11:44:01 | It is an action to make a touch attack with a Vampiric touch charge. it is an action to make multiple attacks as a fighter. Allowing the fighter to take multiple attack actions.
Due to the fact a character van only take one action a turn, its not possible Amy character to make multiple Vampiric touches a turn.

| #3WaysideAug 29, 2014 11:48:03 | The fighter extra attack feature would not grant additional vampiric touches since the spell specifies the vampiric touch as an action performed on flowing turns.
Where it it gets a little bit murky is whether you can action surge to do it twice. |
| #4shivafangAug 29, 2014 12:12:50 | I think the OP meant with Action Surge.
Anyone care to comment if Action Surge allows you to Vampiric Touch twice? (I'd say yes) |
| #5ChristopherGrovesAug 29, 2014 12:36:23 | I think there are three items, all generating from the question on how you read the follow-on attack from Vampiric Touch: "until the spell ends you can make the attack again on each of your turns as an action". Clearly, the first time you cast it the ACTION you're taking is "cast a spell". In subsequent rounds, are you making an "attack" action?
I'm mostly pondering the second. |
| #6SorxoresAug 29, 2014 12:37:05 | well by RAW:
Action surge: On your turn, you can take one additional action on top o f your regular action and a possible bonus action.
So action surge let you use you 2 action and a bonus action in a single turn
EK Starting at 18th level, when you use your action to cast a spell, you can make one w eapon attack as a bonus action. so your bonus action could be to swing your weapon (not spell, weapon are in the quipmenetlist under weapon, if it's not there it's not a weapon, except for imrpovised weapon but still not a touch spell)
Vampiric touch: Until the spell ends, you can make the attack again on each of your turns as an action.
So an EK fighter could use his action surge to attack twice with vampiric touch, then one with his greatsword (or any other weapon from the weapon list in the equipement section) |

| #8shivafangAug 29, 2014 12:48:43 | It's not an attack action. It's 'as an action'
The action is attacking with vampirit touch. It doesn't use any of the 'standard' actions. (There are other rules elements that do this too that use your action to do something rather than one of the 'standard' actions)
You are not casting a spell (you are using an existing spell that is still in effect), so the EK's 18th level ability does not apply.
It does not say once per turn, so I'd say that Action Surge does let you Vampiric Touch twice. |

| #10ChristopherGrovesAug 29, 2014 12:55:48 | I could buy that; it's a new and special vampiric-touch-follow-on action.
I'm trolling other similar spells - Flame Blade is worded slightly differently as well. There may be a gem in here somewhere. |
| #11melloredAug 29, 2014 13:01:11 | The only thing i've noticed thus far...
Battlemaster's feigning attack will give you advantage on your next attack. Not neccicaraly weapon attack (feignt + contagion)
Druids Shillelagh can be used with multi-attack. Letting you be a Wis based fighter. |
| #12KarlBAug 29, 2014 13:21:06 | Pretty straight forwards answers actually.
An Action is basically a once a turn activity that can cover any number of things. From Attack to Dash or any number of other things that are listed all over the book.
To have Extra Attacks, you must take the Attack action *specifically*.
The followup attacks from Vampiric touch, while using the word attack, is NOT in fact an Attack *action*. The spell itself uses an action for it's followup Vampiric Touches. Since only the by the book Attack action gets those Extra Attacks, then Vampiric Touch's Action only hits once. Try and think of Vampiric Touch as a miscellaneous action rather than an Attack action even if you are rolling a melee spell attack. In fact, the fact that you are rolling a melee *spell* attack should give it away.
As for Action Surge, the ability doesn't specify that it can only be used with a particular action. You can pretty much do anything that qualifies as an Action, including Vampiric Touch. |
| #13ChristopherGrovesAug 29, 2014 13:25:48 | Or on a dipped casting cleric to have a handy smack-stick.
Kinda begs the question though, since it is writen "your spellcasting attribute", so a 3rd level Warlock of the tome would be using CHA to melee (hit and damage). Hmm, there's a different direction I hadn't envisioned taking. Warlock 3-ish / Paladin rest ish smacking things w/ a Shillelagh, getting the CHA on both and being able to divine might / strike. |
