| #1potenequusAug 04, 2015 17:05:53 | Hey everybody. Have a question about how many spells can be cast in 1 turn. I have a party member that has a level 4 human-variant sorcerer. He took war caster as a bonus feat (human-variant). At level 4 he took Magic Initiate (picking up Hex from warlock). On page 202 of PHB it states that you can use your bonus action to cast a spell, and only cast a cantrip of a casting time of 1 action. War Caster on page 170 states that you can cast a spell of 1 action as an opportunity attack if the spell targets only 1 creature. So here is my question, does page 202 override page 170 or vice versa?
Is it possible to cast Hex (bonus action), cast fire bolt (cantrip, 1 action) and if the target moved outside his 5 foot range, awarding an opportunity attack, he can use war caster to make another attack if it only targets 1 enemy?
I do know twinned spell metamagic is not taken into consideration yet.
Thank you in advance. |

| #3RikjuhAug 05, 2015 7:07:18 | If you cast a bonus action spell you can only cast cantrips for that TURN. Important here is the difference between turns and rounds. Example: Your turn: Hex + cantrip Enemy turn: Trigger AoO --> You can cast a spell against him.
Because the spell casting and the AoO happen on different turns you can cast multiple spells in 1 round.
If you however cast a dissonant whispers which makes a target run away and proc an opportunity attack (Please do not start the debate about whether it really does this since it's irrelevant here), in this case warcaster would NOT let you cast a non-cantrip spell because you are still in the same TURN. |

On your turn, you can: Take 1 Action Take 1 Bonus Action Take 1 Reaction. Taking your reaction on your turn though means you can't take another reaction until the start of your next turn.
Example: On your turn,... You cast Dissonant Whispers as your 1 action, which causes the creature adjacent to you to leave your reach, allowing you to make an OA. Warcaster allows you to cast a spell in place of an OA. As your 1 reaction, you cast Hex, or any 1 action spell that targets one creature, like Witch Bolt, Crown of Madness, Hold Person, Finger of Death...
Works fine. But you don't benefit from Hex this turn.
Example: On your turn... You cast Hex as your 1 bonus action. You cast
I'd use the first example if the creature is adjacent to me and the 2nd example if it was at range. Chill Touch and other ranged spell attacks suffer disadvantage if an enemy is within 5 ft of you.
However, let's say you have a friend who has readied Dissonant Whispers as a reaction to you attacking a creature. Example: On your turn... You cast Hex as a bonus action. You cast Chill Touch as an action (limited to a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action because of the Bonus Action Spell rules) Your ally casts Dissonant Whispers on your target, which causes the creature to leave your reach, allowing you to make an OA. Warcaster allows you to cast a spell in place of the OA. As a reaction, you cast Chill Touch (limited to a cantrip because of the Bonus Action Spell rules.)
If you cast a spell as a bonus action on your turn, all other spells cast on your turn are limited to only cantrips with a 1 action casting time.
If you use your reaction on another creature's turn though, the only limitation is the one imposed by Warcaster- the spell can only be one that targets a single creature. It can be a cantrip or 1st+ level spell.
Example: On your turn, you cast Hex as a bonus action and Chill Touch. You end your turn. On the next turn, which is an ally's, they cast dissonant whispers, which causes the creature next to you to leave your reach. On your ally's turn, you use your reaction to make an OA, and using Warcaster, cast Witch Bolt.
Your reaction in this example is not limited to a cantrip since it is not being used in the same turn that you cast a spell using a bonus action. |

its ver important to differ a ROUND from a TURN. ROUND is the lapse of time (6 second) it take for everyone (all the player and each monster) to have there TURN TURN is also a lapse of time of 6 second) when a single creature (player or monster) can use his action, bonus action and movement.
For the time laps, remember that the combat is decompose in turn for sake of simplicity but if you were to make a movie and represent the fight every turn would happen at the same time, with maybe a fraction of a fraction of a second between each action of each turn
A round is compose of many turn, but each creature (player and monster) only have 1 turn per round (some exception exist for higher level (thief level 17 ability; Thief reflexes) and magical spell (Time stop) get included, but as the general rule, each creature get only 1 turn per round, and a round is comprise of all the turn
So basically you can cast Hex as your bonus action, then ready action for chromatic orb to be trigger on the next player turn On the next player turn it's a different TURN so you can cast chromatic orb no problem warcaster require the target to provoque an attack of opportunity by movement so it will occur during the target turn, one again a different turn so you can cast vampiric touch if you so desire. |

| (Reply to #9)potenequus | Since we went way off the question I asked and came up with a bunch of other examples, still looking to see if my example is possible?
On my turn I cast Hex (bonus action), then cast fire bolt (cantrip, 1 action) and if the target moved outside my 5 foot range, awarding an opportunity attack which is a reaction, I can use war caster feat to make another spell attack if it only targets 1 enemy and has a casting time of 1 action? Did see that Yunru so no, but why?
Also Rikjuh said I could. Again thank you for your input. |

1 action spell action surge spell reaction (warcaster / counter spell / shield). *Does counterspelling your own spell still count as casting that spell? = 3 spells
or 4 if you use a bonus action spell and 3 cantrips.
If you want to strech the definition of "cast" a bit... contingency make a simulacrum of yourself. (*infinite if you make a simularcum loop). prepare a glyph of warding and walk over it. (*or infinite glyphs of warding, using your simulacrum to wish for 25,000 gold of powdered diamonds). beast master 15 to "double" all the spells casts. |

| #16YunruAug 06, 2015 16:37:47 | Any readied spell requires concentration. |
| #17guachiAug 14, 2015 22:35:15 | The maximum number of spells you can cast in a round is at least seven. |
| #18YunruAug 15, 2015 5:24:01 | Uhhhh. Action, Action Surge, Mystic, Bonus Action, Reaction. That's 5. And then they'd all have to be cantrips. How, pray tell, are you getting 7? |
| #19guachiAug 22, 2015 14:52:06 | You could be a 17th level thief and get two turns on round one of combat. Just take one or more levels of a spell casting class and you could get: reaction (1st turn. reaction resets) action bonus action reaction (2nd turn. reaction resets) action bonus action reaction
