I know i must be missing something, but i admit i can't quite noodle through how many weapons a new char starts with. For example the monk equipment section states:

• (a) a shortsword or (b) any simple weapon
• (a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
• 10 darts

Does this mean the monk starts with two weapons?

What about the fighter which says:

(a) chain mail or (b) leather, longbow, and 20 arrows
• (a) a martial weapon and a shield or (b) two martial
weapons
• (a) a light c rossbow and 20 bolts or (b) two handaxes
• (a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack

Read one way it could be 2 weapons, the other way it looks like 4 as long as one of them is the handaxe.

Opinions?

thanks

AFAIK you pick either (a) or (b) from each point. When I made my fighter I went with leather armour and ended up with a longbow, a light crossbow and two hand crossbows.

Each of those options is an either/or choice.

  • A monk picks either a shortsword, or any simple weapon.
  • A monk also picks a dungeoneers pack, or an explorer's pack.
  • And also gains 10 darts.

Its not worded very clearly, but this is the intent of the rules. For clarity I will continue with your fighter.

  • A fighter gains their choice of chainmail armor, or leather armor plus a longbow and 20 arrows.
  • They also gain their choice of a martial weapon and shield, or two martial weapons of their choice.
  • Their choice of a light crossbow and 20 bolts, or two hand axes
  • And finally their choice of a dungeoneer's pack or explorers pack.

If we assume the fighter had the soldier background, their final kit may look something like the following:

  • a) Chainmail armor
  • b) A longsword and longbow.
  • b) two hand axes
  • a) dungeoneers kit.
  • An insignia of rank
  • A trophy taken from a fallen enemy
  • A set of bone dice, or a deck of cards
  • A set of common clothes
  • a belt pouch containing 10gp
  • and 1 trinket (p160-161).

Hope this helps
