Oil Flasks and Searing Smite

Hail, fellow adventurers!

Had an interesting session yesterday that prompted a couple questions. We were "tactically advancing in a direction opposite to where the enemies were located" and as a Lv 1 Paladin with no ranged weapons (learned THAT lesson), I decided to cover our recently vacated territory by hurling a few oil flasks which our Wizard was nice enough to spark with Prestidigitate. Having advanced to Lv 2 and gaining access to Searing Smite, I was looking at the Handbook entry for Oil (pg. 152).

The way its worded, if you ATTACK with it and it gets ignited the creature takes 5 fire damage. So a Searimg Smite on a non-resistant oil-soaked target (using a standard 1d8 Longsword and my +3 Str modifier) Would do 1d8 + 3 slashing plus 1d6 + 5 fire damage?

The other question is how long it lasts. Then way the entry is written it looks like oil burns for 2 rounds, UNLESS you attack/soak an enemy in which case it only does the 5 damage when first ignited?

Little help? Thanks!
