For example, my paladin rolls a 20 on the die. I then declare I would like to use my 2nd level spell slot for a smite. I would do an additional 6d8 damage. Is this correct? Would anyone find this annoying? |
| #2YunruOct 22, 2014 13:38:57 | No it's totally wrong, you should use your highest :P Other than that, correct. |
| #3NovacatOct 22, 2014 13:39:41 | Not only can you wait until after rolling the attack, you *must* wait until you have rolled a hit. Divine Smite can only be used after you have scored a hit (or a crit), so it's never wasted.
The best time to smite is, of course, when you crit. |

Seems like it can go to 7d8 against fiends/undead with Improved Divine Smite. Does the 5d8 just apply to the slot you use? Or is it 5d8 max period, and Improved/fiends/undead just mean you can use lower-level slots to get to 5d8? |
