| #1tendentiousAug 22, 2014 23:14:24 | This doesn't strike me as over- or under-powered or broken; it just seems strange enough that I think it's an error.
Divine Smite inflicts 2d8 damage for a 1st level spell slot, plus 1d8 for every level of the spell slot above first, to a maximum of 5d8 damage. So 1st = 2d8, 2nd = 3d8, 3rd = 4d8, 4th = 5d8, 5th also = 5d8. The fact that 4th and 5th level slots both do 5d8 is just a bit odd. Why not cap at 6d8? Or why not start at 1d8 at 1st level? That way it's a simple progression.
It just seems that because it would have been so easy to make it straight-forward and elegant, the fact that it isn't suggests that it's an error. As I said, it isn't a problem per se. It just made me wonder if that was what was intended. |
| #2ShiroikenAug 23, 2014 11:24:27 | It was probably to limit the amount of damage that can be used to Critical Smite. |
| #3Thoughts_My_AimAug 23, 2014 11:28:19 | Since paladins don't have access to spells above 5th, I'd say the fact that they bothered to cap at 5D8 implies that it's intentional. Most spells that have damage scaling with slot don't define a maximum.
I suppose the idea could have been to stop a multiclass Paladin/Other Class using the spell in a higher level spell slot than Paladins have access to? |

| #5NaabsaureAug 23, 2014 13:53:35 | It seems to me that the fact that the scaling is capped isn't what bothers the OP, it's the fact that scaling seems to be capped 1d8 too soon, as using a 4th or a 5th lvl spell slot yield the same amount of damage.
And I agree that this seems odd. |
| #6KattahnAug 23, 2014 15:12:36 | Agreed the scaling seems to cap 1 lvl too early.
And this was capped because in the beta, people were running paladin 2/caster X and smiting like monsters. |
