Paladin Divine Smite - clarification please.

Starting at 2nd level, when you hit a creature with a
melee w eapon attack, you can expend one paladin spell
slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to
the w eapon’s damage. The extra damage is 2d8 for a
1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher
than 1st, to a maximum o f 5d8. The damage increases
by 1d8 if the target is an undead or a fiend.

 

My read on this is that you can use Divine Smite the number of times you have spell slots.

When used in melee, you have the weapon + 2d8 damage if hit.

To me the phrase " expend one spell slot" refers to using Divine Smite in place of a spell.

 

There was another post in here that was referred to weapon + 2d8 + Thunder smite.

Meaning you used a spell with Divine Smite inferring spell slot means spell.

 

Your thoughts?

You can use thunder smite and divine smite and weapon attack all at once.

 

It will take 2 spell slots.  One for thunder smit and one for divine smite.

Thunderous Smite is a spell which adds damage to your next attack after you cast it (in addition to other effects). Divine Smite is a paladin feature that allows you to sacrifice spell slots for additional damage. These are two separate effects, but you can use both on a single attack. You would have to cast Thunderous Smite as a bonus action, then make an attack and burn off a spell slot for Divine Smite.

 

You would then deal [Normal weapon damage] + 2d6 + [Xd8 where X is 1 + the level of spell burned for Divine Smite]

If you roll a crit on a big bad, like a dragon, I TOTALLY recommend using both at the same time.  That's Phreak levels of Tons of Damage.
