#1 Brir Aug 09, 2014 21:56:03	How the skill Performance interacts with the musical instrument tool proficiency? We should add the two proficiencies or use just one. In  the second case, why exists instrument proficiency?
#2 Larry_Hunsaker Aug 09, 2014 22:22:16	Seems you are proficienct in the intrument rather than the generic skill Perform. So if you have proficiency in an intrument you get your proficiency bonus to your Dex (perform) checks. My son is not proficient in Orchestra, rather, he is proficiect in the Violin and thus can play Orchestral pieces in it.
#3 AaronOfBarbaria Aug 10, 2014 1:35:04	Put basically, if it is listed on the musical instrument section of the tools table (page 50 of the Basic D&D pdf, and somewhere in the PHB's equipment chapter) then you need to have proficiency in that specific instrument to gain your proficiency bonus on checks related to playing that instrument.   If it is a type of performance not consisting entirely of your ability to play a specific instrument, such as signing, dancing, or comedy, then it is covered by the Charisma (Performance) check, which you add your proficiency bonus to if proficient in Performance.

Also the musical instrument proficiency allows its user to craft those musical instruments so has a use outside of skill checks (as do all the tool proficiencies).
