I need some advice and clarification. If a character has a periapt of wound closure. Does this mean that since he is stabilized at the beginning of his round that aferr 4 hours he regains 1 hp and is revived?

If this is the cass i could jump off a cliff, become stable and 4 hours later i get up and walk away.

Yep, if the fall fails to kill you, then you stabalize 1d4 hours later.

With that being said, If you were not wearing that item you could jump off the same cliff and make 3 death saves to stablize witht he same outcome.

You stabalize and gain 1hp 1d4 hours later.  Left a few words out of that first sentence.

Especially with the Injuries and Massive Damage options in DMG272-3.

I was just using the cliff as an example. My DM feels the Periapt is a broken item, thinks it equates to you being nearly immortal.

I'm not sure why. It is an uncommon item, so it's not very powerful by magic item standards.

The description says you stabilise when dying at the start of your turn. So, you stay on zero hit points and don't need to make any death saves. Good but not a big deal, IMO. You can still be hit while unconscious and stable, with each hit being a critical (2 failed death saves). It might not happen very often but it's possible.

The second part is you get to double the hit points restored by using a hit die. I don't see this as in any way a game-breaker.

Perhaps your DM would feel better when you have advantage on your stabilization rolls, this is preferable for me as a DM as well for the following reasons:

There still is  a still a chance of dying still but the chance to roll a 1 and suffer two wounds is almost non-existent.

There is double the chance to actually roll a 20 and recover 1 hp, something that is not possible by the book at all since you automatically stabilize, which seems weird.

It plays a bit more naturally, and not a get out off death's gip free card whenever you get lethally injured, an instant kill is extremely unlikely to happen after the first 2 levels of play which is already a bit of a stretch for me.

it does kinda make you immortal. paticularly since stabilize resets your death saves. but someone could simply take it off of you. even a wild animal would eventually knock it off, after gnawing on your regenerating body for a few hours.

I appreciate the input. I think I will suggest advantage on death saves, that may appease him. I liked to think it would keep you at 0. Sort of stasis but that didnt go over well.

Nothing about the amulet prevents you from being dismembered. You just don't die. And having your head cut off is massive damage.

How about the animal sits on your face and you sufficate.

Funny, A person can stab you every round and you never die, but they hold their hand over your face and your dead.

Does stabalizing reset death save or does waking up? I thought it was the second.

The should invent an executioner feat where one of its features is when you crit an unconcious enemy it counts as three fails.

Multi-attack solves it without a feat. 2 Crits and your gone.

Is this item listed somewhere besides the DMG?  I thought I saw it, but now can't find it.

I was curious of the wording....

It would take a maximum of two hits in a round, not taking into account the actual damage done.
