I need some clarification on poison in 5E. Whenever a monster hits you and does poison damage is the player then subjected to the poison condition? In the case of a Giant Spider it simply says save or take poison damage and if damage brings you to 0 hit points then you are stable but paralyzed for 1d4 hours even if you regain hit points. So if you wake are you still under the condition poison which gives disadvantage to rolls and if so for how long and what cures the poison effect?

That might be an old version of the spider. It now works like this:

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature.
Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage, and the target must make a
DC 11 Constitution saving throw, taking 9 (2d8) poison damage
on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
If the poison damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, the
target is stable but poisoned for 1 hour, even after regaining hit
points, and is paralyzed while poisoned in this way.

yeah there are certain  monsters that do poison over time effects, and it says so in the description, and then there are monsters that do poison damage once, and thats it.

so sometimes poison will become an effect on the person (which means they roll with disadvantage) or the efffect is defined in the monster stats. other times it is a one off boost to the damage roll.

No an attack that deals poison damage does not necessarily inflict the poisoned condition, it will say so when it does.

What about something like the spell Ray of Sickness? The spell description says "On a hit, the target takes 2d8 poison damage and must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, it is also poisoned until the end of your next turn." But it doesn't say what being poisoned entails; does that mean it takes the posion damage again the next round?
