Can this be used on yourself? It seems like it shoudl be able to but the utility of the spell seems diminished as polymorph does not let the subject retain it's mental ability scores if I'm reading it right? So if I turned into a bird, I wouldn't fly where I want to go, but perhaps go start making a nest for the next hour or so?
Or can I not cast this on myself as it is a concentation spell, and since I would now have a bird's intelligence, I'm assuming this woudl interfere with concentation?
I am basically wanting a nice utility spell, but it seems if I cast it on myself I'm hosed, is this a correct interpretation?
Having a bird's intelligence score does not mean that you are incapable of thought beyond that which a bird is capable of, which is why the spell specifically mentions that you retain your alignment and your personality (so that you aren't actually just the thing which you turned into, but a wizard in the shape of that thing).
Retaining your personality is also the key to not being "hosed" and darting off to build a nest when you have somewhere you need to fly to.
