To polymorph spell says you can turn people into beasts. I assume this is the D&D beast category so you can't turn yourself into a giant or whatever?

Tyrannasaurus Rex is the highest level beast at CR 8.

Can you polymorph into a half dragon beast? The template doesnt change the type of creature.

Alternatively, you could say that the half-dragon template increases a CR as it pertains to the spell by 1. I think that's pretty reasonable. I mean, a Half-dragon T-Rex is still super viable!

I believe that past editions of D&D had a prohobition about applying templates to polymorph or conjuration spells unless explicitly allowed.  I'd probably carry this over for at least the polymorph spell, which is restricted by creature type, as would I for the conjure spells that specify a creature type.
