| #1Daydreamer80Dec 03, 2014 16:56:52 | So some questions about the rules on a few spells.
1) If i polymorph, use a class feature to shapechange (ie wildshape) or use the shapechange spell, and i morph into a monster or creature and get its new hit points.
Lets just say for example i morph into a mastiff hound for smelling ability or some such purpose. At any rate i have 5 hit points. I get hit with a disintegrate spell. I fail the save and take 75 damage.
Do i take 5 damage, morph back into a human wizard, then take 70 damage. (lets say my wizard has 80 hp). Or since it drops me to 0 hit point dog, does that outright kill me and i dont get turned back into my wizard. 1.5) Since we are talking about disintegrate, how does it interact with abilities like the half-orc relentless endurance?
2) Pretty sure i know the answer to this, but just double checking to make 100%. I cast a spell like cloud of daggers, which can be mainted for 1 minute with concentration.
3 enemy creatures. Creature 1 and 2 are in the are of effect when i cast it. They dont take damage right away correct? Creature 1 turn comes up on his initative, now he takes damage? even though he uses his move action to get out right away. no damage, or 4d4? Creature 2 is like meh and stays in the aoe for 3 turns, does he take 4d4 each turn if hes in the area being kept up? does he take 4d4, or 12d4. (over 3 rounds), damage always on his initative? Creature 3 walks in there on round 2 and takes damage, he ends his move there. Next round on his inititiave he moves out, does he take 4d4, or 8d4. A creature doesn't take damage when i cast the spell over it right? If it has a way to get out b4 its turn officially comes up. ( say pushed by an ally ).
Presumably all similar spells (ie cloudkill) follow these same general principles.
Thanks.

The RAW tends to say that Relentless wouldn't trigger, since being disintegrated kinda kills you outright. But your DM is free to interpret it another way. In other features the wording can make it big difference, but RAW as long you actually hit 0 due disintegrate, you'll be dust. If you can survive being dust, than any of these abilities works fine.
2.) You got it right. |
| #3Daydreamer80Dec 03, 2014 20:16:11 | Thanks.
So , fairly clear except with regard to the half-orc relentless. |
| #4bonethug0108Dec 03, 2014 20:54:27 | In general, if something has a trigger then the trigger happens first. Exceptions should be noted.
In the case of disintegrate, you would finish resolving that first, then if something is triggered it happens after. So you'd be dust before you could use relentless since the attack itself turns you to dust as soon as it hits.
In other words, turning to dust is part of the attack if you reach 0 hp. The attack has to resolve before an attack drops you to 0 hp. You have to drop to 0 hp before using relentless.
The other key part is that even without that, relentless says if you drop to 0 hp and don't die outright, then you drop to 1 hp. Disintegrate kills you outright when you hit 0 hp.
So this one says no you can't use relentless from both angles.
Edit: I was looking up relentless rage for some reason, but it the only difference is the half-orc ability doesn't need a saving throw to gain 1 hp. |
| #5Daydreamer80Dec 03, 2014 20:48:34 | Ah yes , i had forgotten that part of the half -orc text. yes it is clear that disintegrate taking a half orc to 0 hps is insta death.
And polymorph/shapechange, it morphs u back into your true form, which then takes the remaining damage, if it drops you to 0, then your dead.
Man polymorph /shapechange seem so OP in fifth edition, what a huge HP boost.

| #6bonethug0108Dec 03, 2014 21:01:29 | Doh! Again I was thinking of one thing instead of another. Disregard if you saw that.
But the tradeoff is it limits how you can attack, and the fighter may have lived if you used a powerful attack/debuff spell to kill/slow down the enemy spellcaster instead. But that's his problem. |
| #7Daydreamer80Dec 07, 2014 9:48:13 | similar question, if i polymorph an enemy into a sheep , then cast power word kill on them-Does this kill them instantly.? Unlike disintegrate PWK doesnt do damage, it simply says if target has less than 100 HP it dies.
|
| #8melloredDec 07, 2014 12:03:36 | Polymorph reverts when the creature dies. Power word kill is not effective. |

| #10ShinQuickManDec 07, 2014 18:25:15 | I think he confused it for True Polymorph, which does have the "if the creature dies" clause. |
| #11Daydreamer80Dec 07, 2014 18:59:10 | Ok, but that still leaves my question unanswered, if a polymorphed Pc/monster/npc is turned into a creature with less than 100 HP , has power word kill cast on it, does it die?

| #14bonethug0108Dec 07, 2014 20:59:22 | The two spells definitely don't interact well. I would say the base creature(not it's current polymorphed form) has to have less than 100 hp to die. You aren't killing the polymorph form, you are killing the base creature.
Not sure how I would rule whether you revert or not. I would tend to having you revert I think but it's much more murky. |
| #15Daydreamer80Dec 07, 2014 21:01:45 | Yes, its murky indeed. One of my fellow pcs was talking about this combo today. When i dm , i had best be ready for it!

| #17AaronOfBarbariaDec 08, 2014 5:34:18 | There is nothing in the rules which says that A) you cannot both be dead and have hit points or B) that having your hit points "return to the number of hit points it had before it transformed" reverses that you are dead (such as via power word kill) or a pile of dust (such as when having been disintegrated).
I also don't see any reason to assume that turning yourself into a frail enough creature to be affected by such spells/effects is actually a buffer against their ability to do you harm. |

| #20melloredDec 08, 2014 8:27:45 | If you are not unconcious, and you have hit points, what's the penalty of being "dead"? |
| (Reply to #20)AaronOfBarbaria |
|
| #22melloredDec 08, 2014 9:25:15 | IMO, if you have positive hit points, you are not dead.
Hit points represent a combination of physical and mental durability, the will to live, and luck.
And i'm still seeing the "if it dies... it reverts back to it's normal form with it's previous hit points", as the trump rule. |

| #24Daydreamer80Dec 08, 2014 15:37:22 | Well one thing this definatively proves. Shapechange/polymorph are difficult to translate in how they interact with other game effects.
