I didn't see a particular place on the forums for discussing modifying and house-ruling, so if anyone can put this in a better place, please do so.

Having had some experience with 13th Age, the game seems to drag a bit when the combat's over and everybody starts rolling recoveries. It becomes a bit of a chore, to the point where we started taking the average of the die roll, essentially turning them into 4E healing surges.

It seems to me that rolling Hit Dice for healing after a short rest could produce a similar lull, especially the way it's described--roll, decide if you want to roll again, roll, decide, roll, decide, etc...

(Before I proceed, I would like to point out that the following idea is not, in fact, mine, but belongs to Mike Mearls, from Malhavoc's Iron Heroes.)

Instead of having a pool of hit dice to heal with, you have a pool of reserve hit points equal to your maximum hit points. After a short rest, you can choose to spend as many of these reserve points as needed on a 1-for-1 basis to restore hit points. A long rest completely restores the reserve pool, but not your hit point pool.

Thoughts? Would this speed up play while still maintaining the feel of the current system?

In 5e you can only roll HD to recover HP during a short rest (which is no less than 1 hour). This is a tactical choice, and is heavily DM-dependant concerning their pacing of the the game/scenario/etc. at hand.

If your party needs a short rest after every encounter the DM may be pushing the party too hard.

If your party needs a short rest after every encounter they may not be working together.

In my experience 5e does NOT reward those that steal the "spotlight".

The proposed rule makes healing a) more plentiful (no need to roll) and b) more flexible as you can heal across, say, three short rests...a point here, a point there This is as opposed to having to decide exactly when to spend your single Hit Die.

If that's ok with you, then go for it.

Xenuite, a long rest already heals you to full. And the hit dice your character can use during a short rest *averages* out to hit points, more or less. So your options kinda makes it worse for players, not better.

That being said, replacing hit dice with your total HP pool, and regenerating half of them every long rest would be a pretty good idea if everyone uses the default HP per level gain instead of rolling. Comes out to the same thing, but makes it steadier and less prone to extremes, while still fitting within the current rules of the book.

I think you could easily use the OP house rule, no problems. Chars would be more self sufficient coz you effectively get max hp from each HD rolled.
