Prepared Spell List Question

Hello, I have two questions about the use of the prepared spell list.

1. From what I gather the spell list is what you can put into your spell slots. My first question is if the spells have to be placed into the slots BEFORE an encounter/adventure or if the player just simply states they are "using spell x from their list and using x slot for it"?

2. If a spell is on a list, can it only be used once? For example, if a cleric uses Cure wounds on one turn, could they use it again the next?

You prepare a certain number of spells at each level. They don't go into slots until you use them, and that doesn't "use up" that spell(just the spell slot). You need only prepare cure wounds(or any spell) once and then you can cast it as many times as you have spell slots for it's spell level or higher.

Say you can prepare 4 first level spells and 2 second level spells. You prepare spell 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d for first level and 2a and 2 b for second level. You have 6 first level slots and 4 second level slots. You can cast spell 1a 10 times(you can use a higher level slot to cast a lower level spell but not vice versa). You could cast each spell once at it's level and have 2 spell slots at each level you can still cast.

Spells prepared are what spells you can cast each day, not how many times you can cast each spell(you only prepare each spell once). Spell slots are what you use when you use a spell. Any spell prepared can fit into any slot of it's level or higher as many times as you have spell slots for it.

Hope that makes sense.

That's exactly what I needed to know. Thanks a bunch for the help.

No problem, and if my edit confuses you just ignore it. Sometimes it's good to explain things different ways until one clicks. Glad the first one did the trick.

Also, you can prepare any spells you know, it doesn't matter what level. If you are a 17th level wizard with an Intelligence of 20, you can prepare any 22 spells you know. If you know 22 9th level spells, you can prepare all of them and no other spells. Of course, that'd be a bad move because then you'd only have one spell slot capable of casting them in (since you only have one 9th level spell slot), and thus only be able to cast one spell that day. But you could do it if you want.
