Okay I searched for about an hour before posting this question... I can't be the only one that has this question but couldn't find the answer...

Proficiency Checks-

Let's say I want to make a Gnome Rogue and I plan on following the Arcane Trickster Path.

Thieves Tools- At level one do I get the bonus class proficiency (+2) for expertise (+2; if this is a chosen skill for expertise), base proficiency (+2) and dexterity bonus (+3) for a total of +9 to checks using thieves tools?

I remember reading you can only add a proficiency bonus once- or can I take a background that gives proficiency in Thieves tools and gain an additional +2? Or does background have to choose another tool or proficiency that is applicable?

Base Proficiency + Expertise + Ability Modifier + Class Proficiency + Background or am I double dipping somewhere? Can you please site page in PH so I can see it too? Am I missing bonuses I am elligable for?

Thanks!

You only get to apply your proficiency bonus once. Expertise doubles the value of that bonus.

So you get whatever the relevant ability score is, plus twice your proficiency bonus when using thieves tools.

If you gain propficiency in thieves' tools from more than one source, you can shoose to gain proficiency in some other type of tool. You can't take proficiency again to gain additional bonuses.

There is no such thing as "base proficiency" or "class proficiency".

To make a skill check, you roll d20 and add your ability modifier. If you have proficiency in that skill, or if you are using a tool in which you have proficiency (whether from background or class - it doesn't matter), you add your proficiency bonus once. If you have Expertise in that skill or tool, you add your proficiency bonus again (so it counts double). That's it. That's all you get.

So if your 1st-level rogue with a Dex modifier of +3, say, has proficiency and expertise in Thieves' Tools then he gets +7 on picking locks, That's made up of a Proficiency Bonus of +2, doubled because of Expertise to make +4, then added to the Dex modifier of +3 for a grand total of +7.
