Question about charm and dominate person spell

Hello everyone,

 

i was wondering what exactly constitutes a "charm"? Is it only spells like charm person or is the "dominate person" spell also a charm? If so, does the Fey Ancestry racial trait then apply? Or the level 7 aura of an Oath of Devotion paladin?

Charm is a condition.  It means the enemy can't attack you and you have advantage on social checks (persuasion).

 

Dominate person (and many other spells) say that you "charm for the durration", and it comes with other benifits "While the target is charmed....".

 

So yes, elves would get advantage against dominate person.
