Question about Readied Actions, and Trap the Soul issue

So I've found an oddity that I wanted to open up for discussion and get people's opinions on.

Under the "Ready" section, page 193, the PHB says "...you can take the Ready action on your turn so that you can act later in the round using your reaction."

Under "Combat Step by Step" and "The Order of Combat" on page 189, the PHB notes that after everybody's turn has occured, the round ends and a new round begins.

It seems like the definition of a round has gone back to the 2nd Ed version of having a discrete ending instead of being a rolling window between any character's turn and the beginning of their next turn.  Taking those two sections together, it really seems that as written, you cannot ready an action to react to a creature with a higher initiative than you, because before you "wrap around" initiative order, the round ends, and you are no longer acting "later in the round".  I'm not sure if this is intended or just an artifact caused by the sections not being as wordy as the were in 3rd or 4th Ed.

As a completely unrelated side note, anybody else noticed that the Wizard Spell "Trap the Soul" is on their spell list but not actually defined in the full spell information section?

You bring a good point i had not realised, being so used with how Ready An Action work in 4th edition.

Reading it over again, you have to take your readied reaction in the same round and thus cannot react to creatures or event above you in the initiative order, which disadvantage you considerably if you're in the low end of it.

I suspect that the writers are using 'round' differently in the two places.

Yes, the missing trap the soul has been noted.

There 2 kinds of "rounds" in play. The Combat, or Inititative, Round which starts at 30 and decreases to 1. Then there's the Characters Round, which starts on their first turn in combat and continues to their next turn in combat.

The Ready action is based on a character round. Just like Spell Duration is.

  Yes, the RAW doesn't allow low-init character to ready actions against high-init characters. But that is not the intention and Mike Mearls has confirmed that on twitter.

@chimerasame : Can a low-init character ready an action, then take that action if legit triggered by a  high-init character in the next round?
@mikemearls : yes

  As for 'trap the soul' , it seems that they change spells name or fold them into other spells and forget to change them in other places in the book.

 Another example is the paladin spell 'destructive smite' which you can't find in the spell section , and a ' destructive wave' spell that is not on any spell list. So one would assume that they change the name.

I have beem doing alot of research on this, and this has also come alot in my campaigns, especially with rogues having a high initiative. How does one kill them if you ready an action if they go first?

So what i did is i house ruled that ready an action, to take a reaction applies to your next round also, otherwise its a complete lockdown, and honestly a bit stupid

The round business is not as hard as it seems. The are using 'round' just like we typically use units of time. If we're talking about an hour, it could mean 60 minutes starting now ('I'll be back in an hour') or it could mean 60 minutes starting at zero ('on the hour'). People don't find it confusing because the context makes it clear. So unless there is a place in the rules where the context isn't clear, it's not really a problem.
