#1 ZLTarkad Oct 08, 2014 12:22:06	Hello, got the Monster Manual recently and got into a heated debate(with my friend) over how to overcome a certain type of monsters' resistances--Devils.   The monster manual says "Damage Resistances: cold; bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing from non magical weapons that aren't silvered" Now to me to overcome resistance to deal full damage means your weapon has to be both magical and silvered. To him, it means either magical or silvered.   Help me know the answer.   Edit:   Thanks everyone who replied. To me though, from how I read it, I still read it as it meaning both. But after calming down from the debate and reading it again I can see his side too. Guess in the end, it would all come down to DM ruling if s/he wants to offer an even more difficult challenge to his/her adventurers.
#2 Saelorn Oct 08, 2014 12:33:28	Either magical or silvered would work. If you have a non-magical silvered dagger, then that isn't a "non-magical weapon that isn't silvered"; it's a "non-magical weapon that is silvered".
#3 El_Condoro Oct 08, 2014 13:22:48	Resistance gives half damage. PHB p. 197. For devils, their resistance means any weapon that deals cold, bludgeoning, piercing or slashing damage will deal half damage unless it is silvered or magical. So a nonmagical mace will do half damage. A nonmagical but silvered mace will do full damage. A magical mace will do full damage.

#6 alienux Oct 09, 2014 8:22:21	"Non-magical weapons that aren't silvered" means that if the weapon is non-magical, that non-magical weapon must be silvered to cause full damage. If it is magical, the resistance is nullified.   The "non-magical" part of the rule applies to all of the damage types previously listed. Therefore, the resistance is only to non-magical weapons that aren't silvered. The creature is not resistance to those types of damage from magical weapons, since only non-magical weapons are specified.
